Every so often we run across some pretty cool events on a bicycle that are fun like Clif’s Cyklescramble, intense like the Redbull Rampage, and completely bonkers like The Bilenky Junkyard Cross. So for something completely different but no less amazing you have to check out “Artistic Cycle” (think about a cross between ballet and acrobatics on a bicycle), and Cycle Ball which is…. well you just have to see the video. What may surprise many about these unique cycling disciplines is that they are both actually a UCI sanctioned sport.

The UCI Indoor Cycling Championships were just hosted in Malaysia consisting of these two events, so do a reverse no hand wheelie backwards past the break and see what you’ve been missing…..

Many may have seen this video floating around the internet of above Artistic Cyclist Nicole Frýbortová doing some amazing moves on a bicycle. Though from Czech Republic, due to confilcts, Nicole represents Slovakia during UCI competitions and placed 3rd in last year’s UCI World Championships.

Cycle ball is a little like hockey in that there is a lot of contact and you have to smack the ball into the goal…. using your bike. We saw an example of what a Cycle Ball bike looked like earlier this year during one of the UCI World Cup events. Though unique, the action on the court is as intense as ever. Check out the last video of the 2011 UCI World Championship final between Switzerland and Austria. How the fans aren’t standing, drinking, and screaming their heads off is beyond me. Maybe if the sport had The Hanson Brothers things would get a little more spicy.

Cycle ball doesn’t look like hockey at all. Football, yes.

There exists a bike sport that is similar to hockey. And that sport is hardcourt bike polo.

Bike polo always seemed silly to me – why would you ride with a mallet in your hand? A long time ago I invented a sport called Bicycle Motocross Soccer (BMS). It was soccer played on BMX bikes. We usually played on teams of 3 people each in a cul-de-sac using opposite driveways for goals. It was a lot of fun and was very similar to Cycle Ball. I’m sure there’s a reason for the silly looking bike design, but it would be easy to recreate what I did as a kid using mountain bikes or whatever stock bike you chose.

There are aspects of many, maybe all, cycling disciplines that can be seen as silly to outsiders not in the know. Hell, even people who are associated may see it as silly. Swimming before biking followed by running? hahah!

The bike is almost certainly designed to be maneuvered quickly in the close quarters of the court. Also allows for goal-tending to be done easily by letting the bars rest on the torso, etc.

amazing bike skills both. What that girl did on her bike and that flawlessly connected so many stunts was incredible!

Think of the trick stuff as unicycle with an extra wheel added. Still impressive skills.

Thanks for posting these – both videos display amazing skills. I’m guessing though that as extensive skill rather than expensive gear is required neither sport will get much exposure or promotion in the general cycling media which is a shame. 🙁

People ask me why I don’t like ball sports and the answer is always, “Because baseball and football don’t have wheels”

This proof that every sport is better with wheels.
