Just a week ago we saw the revamp and reorganization of Rapha’s whole Spring/Summer line, and were simply teased about a new upcoming version of their Classic Jersey. But already they have sent us over details of the new jersey on which they built their brand. Being 12 years old without any major updates, it’s surprising looking back that it is still one of their most popular items. Now finally a new Classic Jersey II gives a well deserved update to the mainstay jersey with better merino blend fabric, an updated fit, and improved details. Take a closer look with us after the break…
We really didn’t think we’d be writing about another new Rapha product announcement so soon, but the new Classic Jersey II adds a lot of improvements over its predecessor: 12 major updates for 12 years.
The biggest change is the new RPM150 fabric (150g/m²), which is a lighter weight, less merino-rich wool/synthetic blend (39%/61%) that claims a softer feel and better breathability. Interestingly the women’s version seems to use a different 36%/64% blend in its RPM150 fabric. Then it gets an updated Forward Fit that is a bit more aggressive with longer sleeves, a lighter Stretch Mesh zipped pocket for lower profile and flexibility, more Reflectivity at the bonded on valuables pocket zip. Graphics and design get more Streamlined with bonded transitions, a more low-key Debossed arm logo, a thinner and more refined Collar, and low profile or minimized Stitching throughout. Details get cleaned up with a Main Zipper that again uses bonded construction to reduce bulk, Pockets that are reworked so their edges are more durable over time, a simple Pump Loop like many of their other jerseys to replace the older, harder to use pump pocket, and an overall improved construction of the 3 main rear pockets to better haul more Cargo.
The updated £110/140€/$170 men’s Classic Jersey II comes in 4 standard colors gray with pink, a solid dark wine colored purple, navy with white, and black with white. Women get the black and white version, plus a navy with pink version for the same price. Men get one more option for the same price in a special 12th anniversary stealth version in all black that adds some 12yr embroidered graphics on the upper back.
As with all the Rapha Classics, this new jersey gets the same Classics 30 Day Guarantee. Ride it for 30 days, and if you aren’t happy with it, Rapha will refund you your full purchase price, taking out all the risk of trying the new jersey.
Not many pieces of cycling clothing can celebrate a dozen years running and still stay fresh. With a bunch of subtle updates Rapha seems to have injected a lot of new life into the jersey that started it all for them, while essentially keeping the aesthetic unchanged. We’ve got one in the office to test out, so look forward to seeing if 12 little updates add up to something much bigger.
