Gevenalle partners w/ Kogel Bearings for first CX specific derailleur pulleys

Since their inception, the team at Gevenalle has put all of their focus on making components that excel in harsh conditions. Hot of the press is the new CX pulley set, which will also available on the BURD rear derailleur. Check past the break to see what makes this a cross specific design…

Gevenalle has focused on what’s important for most riders and racers –  durability and performance. One can expect a longer lifespan from their jockey wheels due to the alloy construction but also due to the open body design of the pulley set which ensures fast mud shedding. Additionally, extra thick seals, developed by Kogel, protect the inner bearing system against water and other contaminants. In addition, alloy plates covering the seals keep larger dirt and grit particles out.

The new pulley set is also available on the BURD rear derailleur in the 11 speed option. Replaceable bearing seals are included for working on the steel ABEC 5 ball bearings. They’re also available for purchase if needed. The pulley set and rear derailleur are available for immediate purchase. The jockey wheels are running $69, while the rear derailleur option is set at $99.

The large holes just look like somewhere for more mud to build up, as opposed to improving mud shedding. Might help when it’s time to get the mud off with a pressure sprayer, but I can’t see any special magic that will make it fall out on it’s own.

bummed to see this. bearings are wonderful things until they get contaminated and in a muddy cross race, it’s not a matter of “if”, but “when”. A bushing rather than a bearing would work better as cross specific IMO.

As someone who tests automotive bearings, its all about the seal design. We do tests where we submerge a bearing in muddy salt water and run the bearing for up to 500 hours with massive loads. Some designs pass, some fail miserably.

I love that Gavenalle is making affordable shifting groups for cross, but from what I observed grass courses are a lot harder on derailleurs than mud and sand. Those holes could trap a lot of grass. They should make a latex or rubber boot that can slip over the whole derailleur. Would be cheap and replaceable and only needed on grass courses.

Gee, they look almost like the derailleur pulleys from the late 90’s, ABEC5 bearings, alloy construction.

@Collin S – Yes there are lots of good pulleys on market that work great for road but have virtually no seals to prepare them for off road use. Seals produce drag which is bad for low resistance. We hope to educate a little here as much as anything that keeping bearings clean is first step to having them run. Our pulleys allow for removal of both cover plate and seals to clean and re grease bearings.

@Huffytoss – Yes a plastic pulley is great (quieter and lower resistance) for road use but for cross this alloy one will last longer and as it is re-buildable this makes it a good material for use. ABEC5 are the best level of bearing we can think to use as moving to ceramic moves away from value/performance for specifics of cross.

@Mudrock – This is a mud solution, give us some time to work on a grass solution (MUCH HARDER! 🙂 A boot sounds interesting. Thankfully not all courses are through cornfields, that said the people who make derailleurs love grassy courses as it results in more sales of replacement derailleurs!

@mudrock/the goats – In the past, there was a company making a black rubber rear mech cover (I had one). It used a zip-tie to keep it in place, but was otherwise easily removable. I’m sure somebody else will remember the details.

It was the grunge guard! I think towards the end it was produced by lizard skins.

They’re not both jockey wheels. The upper pulley is the jockey pulley, the lower pulley is the tension pulley. You’re welcome.

@BH Ha! Good one – Hope your not using ‘Road’ shifters on your gravel bike then 😉

We just like to keep our focus on cross as we enjoy it. We are pretty sure a cx shifter will hold up better on gravel than a road one.

@Ron G. We prefer ‘Guide’ and ‘Tension Pulley’ but then we prefer Bourbon to Gin.

A couple things.

1. The pulleys cost $69, but the whole rear mech only costs $99… I mean that’s fine, it’s just a little, uh, surprising.
2. Will these work with sram force 1 mechs? Those pulleys are 12T and narrow wide. I’m not sure the n/w is really warranted but it’s there.

@Chris Good observation. This is some insight into the manufacturing costs of precision surfacing and bearings vs cast and pinned parts. Would $109 be a fairer price? We wanted to stay south of $100 on what is so often a disposable part (derailleur) in cyclocross. These can be used with Shimano Dura-Ace, Ultegra etc not SRAM.

Hefty price for standard bearings. Alloy cover and open body for mud displacement, how are they unique to other alum pulleys. Thicker seal itself is a fallible association to better protection.
