The latest carbon hoop from ENVE is rolling out of shops as we speak. Not surprisingly, this time it’s an even wider version of their M60 Forty for, what else? Plus bikes. We’ve been seeing teasers of the new wheel and then finally got a chance to see it in person on both the Open One+ above and another soon-to-be-released bike from a different brand. Much like the original M60 Forty, the M60 Plus is meant for aggressive riders who still want to use a plus tire in the neighborhood of 2.8 to 3.0″.
Combined with the Open One+ build above, the new ENVE rim helps to make plus hardtail builds under 20 lbs (!) possible…
Starting with a clean carbon slate, the tubeless M60 Plus rims were built with a 49mm external width and a 40mm internal meant to be paired with 2.8-3.0″ tires. That tire selection keeps in line wit ENVE’s desire to design the rims around a specific optimized tire size for maximum performance and just happens to also be sort of the sweet spot that we’re seeing for the newest plus bikes. Currently available only in 27.5+, ENVE mentions that a 29+ version may be on the horizon.
In the press materials, ENVE calls out something we already know about many plus tires – in an attempt to make something as light as possible, many tires are pretty thin. Which results in more flats, especially of the pinch variety. To counter this, ENVE claims they have added more compliance to the rim vertically as well as reshaping the hookless bead to try and eliminate pinch flats. Will it be fool proof? No. But any additional flat resistance is welcome – especially with a big plus tire that will take longer to inflate on the trail…
We’ve seen weights quoted from 455 to the 480g shown above, but whatever the final weight the M60 Plus should be plenty light with complete rear wheels in the 1627-1810g ball park. Available now, rims will be available in 28 hole for $975 a piece, or in complete wheelsets in Boost spacing only for $2,718-$2,900.
