It may be a pretty small market for full disc rear wheels, but those interested have pretty demanding standards. After all, you aren’t just going to slap on a disc wheel for a cruise around town. Right? No, most users will be looking to shave precious seconds off their TT or triathlon times with the disc rear usually joined by a deep section front wheel as well. While the company has been busy working on a new disc brake wheel line up, they’ve also spent some time perfecting their Bora Ultra TT Disc wheel. The new version is typically lighter, and stiffer which should come in handy with the new crop of TT/Tri bikes for an interesting reason…
Campagnolo already had a race proven pedigree with their Bora Ultra TT, so to make it better they focused on the usual specs. At the pro level weight is still important even with bikes at the limit. The new tubular wheel weighs in at an incredible 864g which is 111g less than the previous generation. Like the wheel before it, the new version appears to use Textreme HM carbon fiber which lends it the checkerboard pattern. The hub makes use of their CULT (Ceramic Ultimate Level Technology) bearings to keep things spinning freely.
In addition to making the wheel lighter, the new wheel is also more stiff – which Campy points out is critical for newer bikes with rear brakes mounted to the lower chainstay. They claim that in testing they found the wheel to flex more at that location under hard efforts than up top at the traditional brake location.
