Pivot’s Mach 429 SL was already an amazing bike. So good in fact, that the newest version has changed very little. Even though there isn’t a lot new, the changes keep the Mach 429 SL current, and end up giving the bike another trick up its sleeves in terms of tires…

Keeping in line with Pivot’s carbon bikes, the Mach 429 SL uses their Hollow Core Internal Molding technology to create a light frame without excess resin, wrinkles, and voids in the carbon. Weights appear to be very close to the previous version with frames starting at 5.3lbs (2.4Kg) and completes capable sub 23lb (10.4kg).

Available in S-XL frames, Pivot recommends the height breakdown below:

  • Small: 5’4″ – 5’10”
  • Medium: 5’9″ – 6’1”
  • Large: 6’1″ – 6’4”
  • X-Large: 6’3″ +

The biggest change to the 100mm travel frame is the addition of Boost 148 x 12 rear spacing. The move allows for stiffer rear triangle as well as stiffer 29″ wheels to be used and offers additional tire clearance. That clearance can be used for a plus tire configuration with room for 29 x 2.35″ and 27.5 x 2.8″ tires.

Built to include the Pivot Cable Port System, the Mach 429 SL is 1x and 2x compatible along with mechanical or Di2 drivetrain compatible with the battery stashed in the downtube of the frame. Along with the PF92 bottom bracket and ISCG05 tabs, the frame uses post mount 160 disc brake tabs which will fit up to a 180mm rotor, internal dropper routing for a 30.9mm post, and provisions for two water bottle cages.

The Mach 429 SL will be sold in 14 different configurations with 120mm travel forks and pricing starting at $4,199 and will be available immediately.

Seems they just convinced us why superboost was so great on their other plus bike, the switchblade. Now this just gets standard boost.

Apples to Oranges. Totally different bikes. Also, show me the hyper light XC wheels you can buy with 157 spacing please.

To be fair you can’t buy ANY 29er wheels with 157 spacing at the moment…

Nice bike – still pretty short reach and steepish head angle.

The 429 Trail is the slacker/longer option. It was already Boost/Plus compatible.

Press fit? Creak-creak-creak. When many companies are going back to 73 threaded, for obvious reasons, why wouldn’t Pivot do the same?

Because they’ve partnered closely with Shimano and co-developed BB92. To be fair BB92 w/Shimano BB is probably the most reliably press fit BB and works pretty well (but yes I’d prefer threaded)

With 17.65″ chainstays and a press fit BB, they failed to address the two things on the 429 that make it a dated design.

The chainstays are inline with the Specialized Epic which seems to be the standard to measure against. In terms of the press fit, I’ve found them to be quite durable when installed correctly. I would agree that it is harder to service at home.

I would agree with the PF comment if it was any other bike as I have had creacking issues from it in other bikes. But I’ve had 2 Pivots now (an aluminum Mach 4 and the Mach 4 Carbon) and neither one has given me any problem in this area or any other for that matter.

A great bike just got better and even more versatile.

Has anybody tried this bike or is it just coming to the shops? I haven’t found a single comment how it is to ride. How much have they been able to reduce the weight?
