Regardless of the wheel size, tires are getting bigger. Even though there are very few bikes actually built around 26+ at the moment, that hasn’t stopped WTB from offering another option. While 26 x 3″ tires aren’t exactly new (Gazzaloddi anyone?), WTB claims that the new Ranger is the first tire designed for 26+ that is tubeless ready.

To be available in both 26 x 2.8 and 3.0″ sizes, the Ranger will join the larger wheel sizes in offering TCS Tough casings for better durability. That will mean the Ranger will be sold in 26+, 27+, and 29+ in multiple casings and widths to perfectly fit your needs.

If you’ve missed the WTB Deva saddle from their line up, worry not – the popular shape is back. While none of the actual saddle specs have changed, the Deva does get a new graphic treatment which should be welcomed considering WTB has more men purchasing the saddle than women. Like most of the WTB saddles, it will be offered in Team, Pro, Race, and a Pro Gel model.

Below, WTB was showing their ‘Veteran’s Volt,’ a limited edition. Only 200 of the special saddles will be made and $15 from the sale of each one will go to the Semper Fi fund.

WTB is also changing the branding of their thickslick tires to move if from the budget oriented Freedom line, into the standard WTB line. The tires won’t actually change, just the hot patch on the side.

I hope 26+ comes to include 2.5! And hopefully the enduro casings don’t play the weight weenie game. It’s ok for a 2.8 and 3.0 tire to be heavy. It’s unavoidable really. Wanting a tire that big to be light is like wanting a size XL frame to weigh the same as size S.

I’m still happy that I can cut a claimed 500+ grams off of my tires (Dirt Wizards).

There have been 26×2.5″ tires available forever.

Yes 2.5 has been the main size for wide 26″ tires forever but since the 650b takeover there’s been nothing new. 26+ could change that. I personally think 2.5 is the sweet spot for wide tires. While I’ve never tried 3.0, I did run 2.6, 2.7 and 2.8 tires back in the day. There’s a reason 2.5 came out of that era as the most popular size.

yes, there is a reason wider than 2.5 didn’t take hold back in the day. And that reason was 17mm rims. Now that we have proper width rims, we can have proper width tires.

I guess you didn’t ride back then or you would remember sun ringle double wides, Sun big fat mammoths…..Wide internal rims aren’t new. What is old is new, and those that didn’t ride back then just think it’s new.

The reason wide rims didn’t catch on back then is because they squared off tires just like they do today. Only now are we seeing tires designed around wider rims. Back in the day the industry just decided to just scrap wider rims rather than invest in wider tire molds like today. Tubeless is a big reason for wider rims sticking this time around I suspect.

Typo here?

So what’s the deal with the dimensions of these new fancy 26+ tires? Same as the old tires, just fatter (like DH back in the day) and trendier? Will all these new meats fit my old Transition Covert that I am riding into the ground? Can I laugh at the scam of 27.5 now?

What, you weren’t laughing at it at the time? 🙂

Vaporware…should be available sometime in 2018. (WTB announces new tires but never has them available.)

Tubeless works very well with Dirt Wizards, just because Surly hasn´t hyped up these tires as tubeless ready both the tires and the Rabbit Hole rims seems to be designed with that in mind as they have a tighter fit than older Surly tire/rim combos.
The DW sidewalls are quite weak, so the WTBs with the tougher casing would be interesting. The best “26+” tires I have tried so far are the Schwalbe Magic Mary 26 x 2,5 foldables, on 50mm rims these are as wide as DW across the sidewalls but slightly narrower across the shoulders. With Trailstar compound and tough sidewalls these tires are a big improvement over the DWs, especially on rougher trails and when it gets wet and slippery. Too bad they are almost impossible to find as they were made specifically for Liteville in Germany.
