At this point, Cycliq has both the front and the rear of your bike covered. The Fly 6 provides rear lighting as well as rear view filming, while the Fly 12 offers even more light and better filming up front. Most likely, if you’re riding on the road you may have a computer mounted to your bars as well. In order to clean up the cockpit area, Cycliq wanted to offer their own dual purpose handlebar mount.
Admittedly, Cycliq’s latest product is hardly breaking the mold when it comes to new designs. Dual purpose handle bar mounts are offered by a number of companies, yet Cycliq thought they could make one that is stronger, lighter, and perfectly fits their Fly 12 (or other cameras) with a number of computers. The result is the new Duo…
Right off the bat, the Duo is already scoring points with its hinged clamp with a bolt that threads in from the top. I’m not sure why other brands insist on making the bolt thread up from the bottom other than looks, but there’s little to love about dropping the bolt in a pile of leaves or in the depths of your garage every time you want to move the mount to a different bike. Fortunately, with the Duo that won’t be an issue. The clamp is hinged at the back, and the bolt drops in at the front, from the top for easy, no hassle installation.
WIth the exception of the replaceable disc, the rest of the mount is CNC machined from 7075 aluminum. Cycliq says that the choice of 7075 vs 6061 leads to a stronger mount without adding extra weight. In fact, the Duo appears to be one of the lightest aluminum dual purpose mounts available at 45.9g. It is however currently only available for 31.8mm handlebars and can’t be switched to 35.0mm like the K-Edge Combo Mount.
Using a replaceable disc system, the Duo will include discs for Garmin (including 1000), Wahoo, Polar, Cateye, and Mio/Magellan, all in the box with the mount. Underneath, the standard 3 fin mounting platform is perfect for the Cycliq Fly12, or for a GoPro, Garmin Virb, etc. It can also be used for lights with the right mount provided you aren’t using the Fly12 which has its light built in.
Continuing their tradition of (successfully) launching through Kickstarter, the Cycliq Duo is also up for crowdfunding. Cycliq mentioned that Kickstarter has been fundamental to their success and that they wanted to say thanks to their supporters by offering a way to get a mount at reduced costs before it hits store shelves. With a retail of $69, early backers can pick up a Duo Mount for about $30 with delivery estimated for December.
