Josh Minalga sent in this photo of his buddy Robert “riding in the Lionhead along the border of SW Montana and Idaho on his 2017 S-Works Stumpjumper.” The Lionhead Recommended Wilderness is an undeveloped area of about 30,000 acres just northwest of West Yellowstone without any road networks that offers some amazing views and plenty of wild trails.

Nice pic of an area it sounds like we won’t be able to ride soon… “Recommended Wilderness” might as well say “Soon to be closed to mountain bikes”

Well Scott, it seems to have been “Recommended Wilderness” for many years, and part of that is keeping it in some kind of in between designation that allows the continued study and access for human-powered use, like our beloved bikes.

You’re both right. I’ve ridden here, it is some of the best high alpine mountain bike riding that you’ll ever ride. There are purpose built mountain bike trails to the CTD, major grizzly bear habitat and unbelievable views of three states. The agendas of the powers that be toward mountain biking in Montana is suspect to say the least and just like the White Clouds in Idaho, if mountain bike riders from everywhere would make some noise NOW maybe we won’t lose another great riding area.
