Rad news for BMX racers – Maryland’s Truth BMX Products have just released details and specs on their 2017 aluminum Main Event frame. Chasing the usual goals of high strength, low weight and of course, good looks, the new Main Event has seen a complete redesign over the 2016 model. The frame now features triple-butted hydroformed tubing, more machined pieces and a tapered head tube among other revisions.
In its latest form, the aluminum Main Event bears a similar appearance to the carbon version we checked out a while ago. As is typical with rider-owned companies, quality is key- Truth’s owners (and longtime BMX racers) Eric and Tony Spear produce frames by hand in small batches and fatigue test their designs to ensure long-term reliability…
While last year’s model was built from double-butted 6061 T-6 aluminum, the updated Main Event is constructed from double heat treated, triple-butted 6069 aluminum. The new top and down tubes are both hydroformed, and the down tube squares off as it nears the BB. The seat tube is also now tapered out where it meets the bottom bracket, creating a very beefy junction where the pedal power is applied.
Last year’s forged dropouts have been replaced and are now CNC machined, along with the frame’s BB shell and head tube. The dropouts are also now cut for 20mm axles, but the bike comes with 15 and 10mm adapters. Up front, the tapered head tube brings the bike up-to-date with current standards.
Not a single piece of the 2016 frame carries over to the current model, but one thing that hasn’t changed on the new Main Event is Truth’s ‘race-winning’ frame geometry. Adult-sized 20″ frames feature 74.5° head tubes and 70° seat tubes, but check out Truth’s website for the full geo chart covering all frame and wheel sizes.
The aluminum Main Event is available in mini to 24” Pro XXL sizes. Shaving a bit of weight off the outgoing model, a 2017 Pro XL frame comes in at 3lbs, 5oz. MSRP is $450 USD, and early buyers can choose between black, white, candy red and blue colors. After the first production run, all color options listed on Truth’s website will be available. The 2017 Main Event frames will be ready for the racetrack by the end of March.
