Rohloff just unveiled their most sophisticated shifter yet – just not for normal bikes. Dubbed the E-14, the electronic shifting system is destined for production 2018 Bosch e-bikes that should be arriving later this year. However, just because it’s limited to e-bikes for now, doesn’t mean it couldn’t be hacked for regular use or even made available aftermarket in the not too distant future…

Created to work with the 14 speed Rohloff Speedhub 500/14, Rohloff claims the Speedhub is a natural fit for e-bikes given the impressive 526% gear range which is bigger than a SRAM Eagle or e*thirteen trsr cassette. Add in the added advantages in maintenance and their claimed efficiency and it does seem like a pretty good match. Available with an e-bike drivetrain package in collaboration with Bosch, the system is designed to integrate with the Bosch e-bike system through CAN-Buss connectivity. That means that the motor will synchronize with the shifting process to prevent too much torque from being applied during a shift. It also means that on eShift compatible Bosch models, the gear will be indicated on the Intuvia and Nyon displays.

As for the E-14 system itself, the electronic shift box is controlled manually through a simple two button shifter with up and down arrows. Shifting can be as simple as one press for one shift, or you can hold the two buttons down for three seconds to enter Multishift mode which shifts “three gears at a time, in sequence, until released.” There is also an auto downshift mode that will allow you to choose a preset gear that the bike will automatically shift down to when at a stop. This should allow you to be perfectly set up to attack those green lights off the line as you make your way through your commute.

Pricing is not currently available as it looks like it will be for complete bikes only, which will be arriving this fall.

Very interesting. So many questions.

Wow, this is the first time a Rohloff seems interesting. The Heavy, squishy feeling under power, weak shifting planetary system would be made all right by the electric shifter when sync’d with the motor, and with hundreds of extra watts on hand to haul it up the hill! Good stuff every day.

Lame. I only use remote operated e-bike e-bells.

That is very interesting product and I want to approach that technologically.
And I’m wondering whether use the electric parts in mountain such as SHIMANO XTR DI2.
Is that just the parts for comfortable and efficient riding in urban?

I think this is promising (particularly if it comes across from e-bikes) simply because it means a reliable, ergonomic way to get a Rohloff shifting from any kind of handlebar. Easily the biggest limitation of the system in my opinion.
Mind you, tourists will probably take decades to accept it’s solid and serviceable like with hydraulic disc brakes. =P

Mr Rohloff, please to sell this electric shifting box alone. A lot of users want this.

Neat idea but adds cost to an already prohibitively expensive transmission with WAY more gears than are needed for e-bikes.

Auto-shifting with something like a Shimano Nexus 7 and you’re really onto something.

Shimano STEPS with an Alfine Di2 hub already does that. It’s a good system in theory, but the default shifting points don’t feel very natural and shift when your at very low RPMs. You can tune the shifting using the software so the bike shifts at a higher cadence though. The Raleigh Misceo ie was one of the first ebikes in the US to offer this (2015-2016 model year), and that bike floats around $2,500. It’s a great commuter or recreation bike.

Does this then mean an end to full up/full down shifting as the manual twist-shifting allows? It’s certianly a feature I appreciate

E-Bikes seem to drive innovation now for ordinary bicycles, like mountainbikes used to (and still do to a degree) 🙂

Would be great if it could be made to work with Di2 shifters… Perfect drop-handlebar setup possible then to suit anyone’s taste!!

Yes, PLEASE! because of a Neurological disorder your Hub would be extremely useful “if” I could get electronic shifting without the Bosch assist – I NEED to keep using my leg muscles (us them or loose them and the ability to walk. SO PLEASE – Thank you! 🙂
