State Bicycle Co. has had a busy winter. The Arizona-based company recently revamped their top-tier aluminum Black Label urban track bike and now offers it in a limited edition Typhoon Blue. Keeping the momentum going, they just announced a 4-bike expansion to their popular line of steel bikes.
Now in their second year and priced at only $299, the entry-point Core-Line bikes are built with high tensile steel in lieu of the 4130 chromoly used in the rest of the Core series which are priced at $449. Despite the low MSRP, which includes free shipping, the new bikes have 40mm deep-v rims, a flip-flop hub for fixed or singlespeed riding, and front and rear brakes. True to their mission as urban machines, the frames are fitted with bottle, rack, and fender mounts.
As we’ve come to expect of State, the new models have been given an even split between contemporary and classic stylings. The Ghoul and Pigeon are clad in grey and white paint with blacked-out rims, spokes, brakes, bars, stem, and cranks.
The Hunter and Ashford have more brightwork with raw aluminum trimmings and light colored rims. Their traditional aesthetics are complemented by timeless hunter green and deep crimson paint schemes. All are fitted with riser bars with some modest customization offered through State’s online ordering page. Buyers can select upgraded seats and pedals with optional add-on purchases of locks, helmets, and flat repair kits.
There are not many bikes you can buy for a buck under $300. For the price-minded commuter or first-time rider, the entry level Core-Line offers a painless purchase without sacrificing quality or style.
