Hunt bike wheels saw 650b/27.5″ Road Plus tires reshaping mixed surface gravel & trail adventure riding, so they dove deep into development for the smaller wheel size. Fatter tires on smaller diameter wheels offers more grip, more float, and often times more flexibility when doing things like bikepacking on a mix of road & trail, or even just mixed surface road riding.
So to add to their first alloy 650b wheelset collaboration with Mason Cycles, Hunt now has an even lighter carbon rimmed AdventureCarbon Disc wheelset. Then expanding in the true adventure & expedition direction, they’re also building a new version of their alloy Mason x Hunt wheels with a 650b dynamo hub equipped wheelset to power lights and gadgets out on tour.
Hunt 650b AdventureCarbon Disc wheels
Hunt says that 650b blends the quick efficiency of 700c tires off-road like on a cyclocross bike, and the improved trail versatility of an XC wheel. Their 650b wheels are optimized for a 2″/50mm tire, which rolls out to the same outer diameter as a 700c x 28mm. That means the 650b road plus sizing makes for an easy fit in many current gravel & adventure bikes.
Dimensions
The new carbon wheels target being a no-compromise, lightweight option for any drop bar riding from road to gravel to trail riding. At a claimed 1425g, the 27.5″ wheels feature a 22mm deep asymmetric rim with a hookless bead and 24mm internal/30mm external width.
Tech details
Hunt recommends tires from 30-54mm (up to 2.1″) on the tubeless ready carbon rims. The disc brake specific rims themselves are laid up of unidirectional T24/30, with a reinforcing at the spoke holes of 3K weave. They get a locking bead seat and a deep center channel to make for an easy & secure tubeless setup.
The wheels are built to Hunt’s durable, well-sealed 4Season Disc alloy hubs, and feature a steel reinforced alloy cassette body, Certerlock brake mount, modular axles to fit any road/cross thru-axle or QR, and an optional SRAM XD driver available separately. The rims & hubs are laced with 28 triple butted, aero bladed, J-bend Pillar spokes with brass external nipples, both front & rear.
The new Hunt 650b AdventureCarbon Disc wheels retail for £879. Pre-order now for delivery at the end of May 2018
Mason x Hunt 650b AdventureDynamo Disc wheels
The new AdventureDynamo Disc wheels are meant to expand on the adventure exploring capabilities of the original Mason x Hunt 650b Adventure Sport Disc wheels, lighting the way for multi-day tours. Hunt sees more riders looking for the ultimate adventure wheelset, for exploring far from home – like their own super endurance rider Josh Ibbett who is currently traveling the world riding these new wheels.
Tech details
The AdventureDynamo share all of the same tech as the Adventure Sport wheels, replacing the front 4Season Disc hub with a Son Delux Dynamo front hub. Whether you need lighting for trouble-free commuting and winter riding or year-round travel, the SONdelux Dynamo takes care of you outputting 3W at 6V while riding just 18kph (and consuming just 4.6W of additional power output at the pedals). When the hub isn’t powering a device, it is said to add less than 0.5W of drag for the rider to overcome. It is the same dynamo hub that Hunt put in their SuperDura Dynamo wheels last spring.
Besides the Son dynamo, the wheels use the 20mm internal, 24mm deep asymmetric alloy rim of the Adventure Sport wheels, with its deep channel and H-shaped bead lock. The rear hub is the same 4Season Disc with the same cassette/driver and axle compatibility. (The dynamo can be set up 12mm thru-axle or QR, not 15mm). Both wheels are again built with the same 28 Pillar aero butted spokes & brass nipples for durability.
Total wheelset weight, including the dynamo front hub is 1821g, and they retail for £499 for the set. Pre-order now for delivery at the end of April 2018
