Commencal says their Meta TR trail bike is finally growing up. Just like the Meta AM enduro bike & the Supreme DH bike, now the all-rounder TR mountain bike gets the boost to 29″ wheels too for 2019. The Meta TR 29 looks to share all of the extra comfort, performance & stability gains that the Meta AM 29 introduced last summer, now in more of an everyday capable trail bike.
Commencal Meta TR 29 aluminum trail mountain bike
Commencal is quick to remind that with 130mm of rear wheel travel & 140/150mm fork travel, today’s TR would have made a solid all-mountain or even enduro bike a few years ago. Thanks to updated modern trail geometry with a slack 66.5° head angle, and big 29er wheels, the new Meta TR 29 will roll over pretty much anything in its path.
Commencal Meta TR 29 tech details
If you’ve seen the latest Meta AM 29, the new bike will look quite similar. It shared its time in development and now looks the part, with the same single-pivot, faux-bar design that Commencal says pairs well with a longer travel fork. It pretty much shares all of the same tech with a new shorter rear triangle than the 27.5 TR, including stiffer seatstays, plus larger pivots & an updated U-link to push the shock.
The updated main pivot also moves lower & further back, optimized for smaller 29er chainring sizes, with the side benefit of reducing pedal kickback through its travel.
Set up with lighter weight builds and often air suspension (although coils work too), some of Commencal’s pro riders have even picked out the new Meta AM 29 for enduro racing when there isn’t quite as much elevation drop.
The 6066 triple butted alloy 29er frame uses a 210x50mm metric shock, Maxle Boost rear end, a PressFit BB92, post mount 160mm brake, and a 1.5″ tapered headtube. The Meta TR 29 gets ISCG mounts, modular internal cable routing, integrated chainstay & downtube protection, again with cage bolts under the downtube & the mud flap at the rear wheel to protect the rocker & bearings. Claimed frame weight (without shock) is 3.6kg.
New Meta TR 29 trail geometry
The new Meta TR 29 scales back the geo of the AM bike to suit the shorter travel. Modern trail means long, low & slack with a 66.5° headtube and effectively steep seat angle, even though the actual number looks slack because of the bent seattube. The new trail 29er comes in four stock sizes (S-XL.)
