Hunt’s affordable, light 30 Carbon Gravel wheels were such a hit, riders kept taking them deeper off-road. So Hunt did what they do best – they developed a new bigger, wider, even more capable X-Wide version of the carbon wheels to go even further off the beaten track, and all at the same price…

Hunt says these new Gravel X-Wide wheels are a direct response to riders of their current wheels who wanted an even more capable, modern carbon gravel wheelset. I’m happy to say I have pushed their light carbon gravel wheels a lot further off-road than they may have originally been intended, with great results.

With a 23mm internal width and thick carbon beads for a 30mm overall width, the new wider gravel wheels are optimized for big 700c gravel tires around 35-45mm. Plus their blunt U-shaped profile and beefy 35mm depth promise strength & stiffness for serious off-road riding.

Hunt has some heavy hitters riding their wheels off-road, like former Transcontinental winner Josh Ibbett who will race this year’s Tour Divide on the new Gravel X-Wides, as will elite Dutch cyclocrosser Gosse Van Der Meer who will race them at the next Dirty Reiver.

The 1548g disc brake only wheelset offers similar build spec to Hunt’s previous top-level gravel wheelset.

The wide T24/T30 carbon rims feature H-Lock tubeless seats & hooked beads that snap tires easily into place, and 3K weave re-enforced spoke holes. (Minimum recommended tire size is 28mm for the 23mm internal rim.)

The Gravel X-Wide wheels are built up on Hunt’s forged & CNC’ed alloy 4 Season Disc centerlock hubs (6-bolt adapters included), with extra seals of the EZO Japanese bearings & extra fast freehubs.

Hubs get fast 84-point 4.3° hub engagement with 6 pawls & a 28 tooth ring, and a H_Ceramik treatment on the alloy freehub body that resists damage from your cassette. Axles are available for QR, 12mm or 15mm thru-axles and freehub bodies for Shimano, Campy, or SRAM XD driver.

The wheels are built with 24 Pillar butted PSR XTRA aero front & 28 rear conventional J-bend spokes with alloy nipples, and rated for riders up to 115kg (254lb) with bike & gear.

I’m curious, a deeper rim makes for a stiffer ride, as does carbon, wouldn’t combining the two make a not-great solution for off road on a bike with no suspension?

Don’t need suspension for gravel. It’s a road after all that just happens to be unpaved. The suspension and compliance is in your psi choice for the terrain, it’s all about the tires. We’ve been riding and racing on 25-35mm deep carbon wheels for gravel since gravel was ever a thing. It’s literally been over a decade.

23mm is “X-wide”? 23 is right in the middle of recommended gravel widths and many recent releases have been in the 25-27mm internal range.

As one who is looking to upgrade their drive train this year from 11 speed Apex to… (SRAM eTAP 12 speed gravel?), I’m really looking for an XD-R hub with the expectation of compatibility. Unfortunately, Hunt doesn’t have this yet, or didn’t when I called Nov/Dec time frame. Otherwise, I might have pulled the trigger on these already.

sounds like you are putting the chicken before the egg here… Sram hasn’t released anything using XD-r yet so why would anyone have a cassette body? Its safe to assume that anyone making a new wheel that is compatible with current XD will have an XD-R version available when the time comes.

Because SRAM, Enve, i9, Zipp, and likely others already have the hub available. Obviously, it is ripe to become the new standard. If I’m going to drop over a grand on a wheelset (granted that’s a great deal), I want compatible going forward, not just with what I have right now. It was the same thing when thru axles came out for road bikes. Many manufactures said you don’t need that blah blah… I’m glad I picked from the only major manufacture that realized how things were going and not where things were before.

They are a value for money manufacturer and I would think catering for early adopters like you is not how they maximize their profit. They offer really good compatibility and when there is a big enough market I am sure they will have the new standard too. I have been in your shoes too and went with Dt 240 which has offers the most adaptability.

Hi David, we have XD-R freehub bodies in production for all of our wheelsets at the moment and expect them to be ready in March/April – if you let us know when placing your order we can also reserve one of the XD-R bodies for you.

I hope that helps you out,
Best regards,
Pete
