Fans of lightweight gravel touring & bikepacking, Ass Savers founder Staffan Widell and designer Jesper Jonsson shared some inspiration overlooking the final stage of the Torino-Nice Rally last summer. The result is a special limited edition collection of lightweight, strap-on fenders to keep rider and gear protected on your next adventure.
Ass Savers Detour Kollection, light bikepacking fenders
Detour doesn’t break ground with any all-new fenders, instead pairing together our two favorite strap-on mini fenders for gravel riding. We reviewed the Mudder Mini & Fendor Bendor Big last summer, just a week or so before Staffan & Jesper set out to ride Torino-Nice. While they aren’t going to block every bit of water or debris from hitting you or your bike, the flat pack, strap-on mini plastic mud guards do a great job at keeping mud out of your eyes (or off your glasses) and rear wheel spray from coating your bikepacking bags.
The limited edition collection is illustrated with a simple dot pattern created by Jesper Jonsson to recall that last mountain vista before descending into Nice at the end of the 700km self-supported bikepacking race. The design gets applied to a Fendor Bendor Big rear fender, a Mudder Mini front fender, and a Purist water bottle.
Ass Savers calls the Detour Kollection the perfect setup for bikepacking. “Strong enough to handle really muddy conditions but flexible enough to not break while being bashed around.” Their thinking is that most bikepacking gear isn’t actually 100% waterproof. Even if your bags have waterproof material, seams & zips aren’t always sealed in lightweight gear, and we often strap extra things like clothes, tents & sleeping bags to the bike as well. Even just less mud & muck will make getting in and out of your bags work more smoothly.
The tiny 13€ Mudder Mini gets pulled down almost touching the front tire to keep your face & headset protected from wheel spray, but also does a good job at keeping a handlebar bag clean & dry too. The Detour edition of Mudder Mini also is a tiny bit thicker material than the standard Mudder to make it a bit more sturdy for rough off-road adventures.
The wide 16€ Fendor Bendor Big is unchanged, and also sits down close to large volume gravel tires and keeps the muck off your saddle bag. The pair only adds 85g top your bike, but lends an extra layer of protection from the elements.
Get the limited Detour fenders on their own (plus a matching 15€ Purist water bottle) or in a full Detour set for 39€, including Mudder Mini, Fendor Bendor Big, and a Purist bottle.
“The Detour Kollection is our declaration of love for the bike as a vehicle of exploration. Fast enough to get you somewhere, slow enough to take it all in. Enough A to B. It’s time to take a Detour.”
