Tout Terrain Xplore bikes take the adventure touring capability of their unique integrated rack steel Silkroad & Blueridge to another level, with Pinion gearbox drivetrains. Whether looking to explore local backroads or head off on a ’round-the-world’ expedition, the reliable, low-maintenance 12-speed internal gearbox means you can load up your touring bike and focus on adventure that comes.
Tout Terrain Xplore series Pinion gearbox loaded touring bikes
We already got a good look at the 26″ & 27.5″ flat bar Silkroad II and 700c drop bar Blueridge steel expedition touring bikes earlier this summer. With Tout Terrain’s built-in modular rear racks, multiple additional mounting options, and drivetrain flexibility… spec’ing out an adventure touring bike is totally up to your imagination. Now, on top of the choice of derailleur or internal hub gear builds, new Pinion mounting means you can pick from 6, 9, 12 or 18 speed gearboxes as well.
Pinion gearboxes – Tech details
The wide-range Pinion transmission give plenty of options depending on the type of terrain you are likely to encounter and how big of a load you will be carrying.
Tout Terrain offers three of the lighter, more affordable C-line gearboxes: C1.6 (295% gearing at 1800g) for commuting, C1.9XR (568% gearing at 2000g) for more urban riding & light touring, and C1.12 (600% gearing at 2100g) for slightly lighter touring loads or steeper terrain.
Or if you need the widest range possible, the P-line P1.18 (636% gearing at 2700g) offers the widest gearing range with smaller steps for the ultimate touring option.
All of the Pinion gearboxes are made in Germany, as is the final Tout Terrain Expedition frame finishing & assembly. (Clarification: Tout Terrain frames are welded in Taiwan, then get custom detailing, finishes & complete builds-to-order just outside of Freiburg, DE.) And beyond sealing your drivetrain away from dirt, dust & mud inside a protected box that promises almost no need for maintenance while out on tour, especially when paired with the Gates belt drive… it also does a good job at balancing the weight of your bike, so you can focus on how you load your racks & bags!
This isn’t the first we’ve seen Tout Terrain & Pinion pairings. Their options just keep growing wider! One of the great things about building up a Pinion bike from Tout Terrain is their unique drop bar shift setup from their sister component brand – the Cinq Shift:R that works with TRP hydraulic disc brakes and we’ve seen on a gravel bike. Paired with Pinions twist shifter, you can build a Tout Terrain + Pinion bike for any occasion.
