It’s been a busy couple of weeks for Bontrager – fresh off the release of a new Aeolus road wheel design and now changing gears for a new mountain wheel. Bontrager’s Line wheels are known as wheels that can take punishment and tackle a variety of terrain. We found this valid on the Line Pro 30 and have seen it trickle down the line (pun intended). What Bontrager released today is a new entry to the Line wheel family, and at $350 per pair, it’s hard not to want some.

What’s new for the Line Comp 30

The newest addition to the Bontrager Line family is a fully updated and modernized Line Comp 30 wheelset. The most significant update to the wheel is the unique rim shape to match the Line Pro 30 released last year. Bontrager went with the same 29mm internal width and a 38mm overall width as its Line Pro 30s rims but swapped out carbon for alloy.

Updated G609 alloy rim

Instead of the OCLV carbon used on the Line Pro wheels, the Comp 30 rolls on a G609 alloy rim, the same rim material used to make the Trek Factory Downhill Teams wheels – the Line DH 30.

Bontrager claims this alloy delivers a best-in-class ride, durability, and is relatively light. The hooked rim is tubeless-ready and comes stock with a Bontrager plastic tubeless rim strip and valve cores.

Upgraded Rapid-Drive hubs

The hubs get an upgrade as well, getting the same 6-bolt Rapid-Drive 108 internals as the Line Elite 30s, with 14 gauge J-Bend spokes in place of the Elites 14/15/14 butted spokes. For those unfamiliar, the Bontrager’s Rapid Drive 108 hub offers 3.3 degrees of engagement and is employed in nearly all Bontrager’s performance mountain bike wheels.

The Line Comp 30 wheel arrives in Boost 110/148 spacing with a 15mm front and 12mm rear thru-axle. The wheels come with an SRAM XD driver, but additional freehubs are available for purchase separately.

The new Bontrager Line Comp 30s are available in both 29” and 27.5” wheel configurations. Both are $350 and are available now from Bontrager dealers or your local Trek shop.

As for weight, the Bontrager Line Comp 30 (1955g) aren’t too far off from the Line Comp Elite (1890g), but the price difference is massive – the Elites coming in at $900 and the Comp at $350. Though the Line Comp 30s do not come with the same Bontrager “Warrantied for life” carbon program as the Line Elite 30 – and don’t explicitly mention weight limit or lack thereof like the Line Pro 30s or Elite 30s.

Were excited to see how these wheels stack up to the rest of the Bontrager Line family. Check back for a full review.

Just got the 2021 line comp 30 .
Initially the tires aired up well after finally getting them on using a tire lever. I decided to change up one tire even before riding and quickly learned something about the factory rim strip which prompted me to remove them as those increased the inner tire lip diameter causing me lots a extra muscle work to install or remove a tire . I don’t want that kind of extra work out on the trail should I need to remove a tire for some reason.
Love the rapid drive engagement.
