Obed have dropped a new model of their carbon frame Boundary gravel bike with a 1×13 groupset. The Obed Boundary Campagnolo Ekar is now their top-end model, retailing at $3,995. And, it is the lightest by far, weighing a claimed 18.5 lbs; that’s 0.7 lbs lighter than the 1×11 Shimano GRX 600 model. Here’s more.

Obed Boundary Campagnolo Ekar

The Obed Boundary is a modern gravel bike with clearance for up to 700c x 45c tires

The Obed Boundary is now available with the widest range 1x gravel drivetrain on the market; the Campagnolo Ekar. That gives riders 13 speeds to choose from, working with a 10-44T cassette and a clutched rear derailleur.

The jump to 13 speed virtually gives riders the range of a 2x, but without the added weight and complexity of running two chainrings and a front derailleur. As such, Campagnolo also claim the Ekar is the lightest gravel group available. It certainly is lighter than any other groupset on other Obed Boundary models, making this their lightest build option.

What else do you get for the money?

The Obed Boundary Campagnolo Ekar also gets a Spinergy GX alloy wheelset with a 24mm internal rim width; customers do have the option to upgrade to the carbon GXX version for $395 for an even lighter build.

The bike is finished off with Campy Ekar hydraulic disc brakes, an FSA cockpit and SL-K Carbon Seatpost, Cane Creak headset, and Panaracer Gravel King SK 700x38c tires.

Pricing & Availability

The Obed Boundary Campagnolo Ekar retails at $3,995 and is available now direct from Obed in sizes XS-XL. Get it in one of seven colorways with your choice of five decal colors. Obed back their frames and forks with a six-year warranty.

Nice package for the money. I have the GX wheels on my Ritchey and love them, only 1475 grams for the set. One caveat with the PBO spokes: if you have to true the wheels, the tire and rim strip have to come off! The nipple is actually more like a nut threaded onto the end of the spoke.

I don’t quite understand the allure of Spinergy wheels. I’ve come across exactly one person in the the 12 years out in the wild that was indifferent about the experience with them. Understand these wheels kind of have their own cult following according to the internet, but if they were so great as some say wouldn’t I see more out there?

When I see “OBED” on the downtube and a dropped chainstay, my mind automatically corrects it to say “OPEN”.

I love the Ekar but in looking at the frame’s geometry, BB drop and chainstay length seem a bit off from what one would typically expect to see,

What would you expect to see? This frame is so popular in the gravel world that several companies are using it.

The same bike with GRX810 lists for $3,024. Savings of $900+ would go a long way toward a wheel upgrade that might make up for much of the weight difference in the groupsets (not that I would ever notice a hundred grams or so spread across a groupset).
