Specialized just unveiled a new aluminum Stumpjumper EVO Alloy version of their popular “Ultimate Trail Bike” that debuted last fall. And it’s a full $1200 cheaper in alloy than in carbon. The trick is, the carbon trail bike went up in price a LOT in the last twelve months. So while the new aluminum bike is more affordable, this all-mountain capable 150mm travel 29er isn’t exactly cheap…

The all-new Specialized Stumpjumper EVO Alloy is every much the same ultra-capable trial bike as its carbon sibling, just a few hundred grams heavier and several hundred dollars cheaper. The new all-metal Stumpjumper EVO shares the same Rx Tune suspension design as the carbon bike pairing 150mm of rear wheel travel to 160mm forks, and the same handling characteristics. It even gets SWAT.

And you can still buy an aftermarket MulletLink from Specialized if you want to set your bike up with a 27.5″ rear wheel.

The 29″ Stumpy EVO Alloy is smooth-welded from Specialized’s own favored proprietary M5 aluminum alloy, yet still manages to build in the SWAT Door storage port into its downtube.

The 150mm travel Horst-link 4-bar frame features a standard threaded BB, Boost rear end, sealed cartridge bearing pivots, fully enclosed internal cable routing, a replaceable derailleur hanger, and a 38.6mm for a 34.9mm dropper seatpost.

The new aluminum bike is available in almost exactly the same six Trail Geometry S-sizes as the carbon bike (+/- a mm), except for 3mm longer chainstays necessitated by the alloy rear end and generally more standover height. I does still get the 3-position head angle adjustment and 2-position bottom bracket height.

Coming soon, a $1900 alloy frameset option will let you decide how to build your “Ultimate Trail Bike”. Or a $5600 Stumpjumper EVO Elite Alloy build will let you upgrade to Fox Factory suspension, GX Eagle mechanical drivetrain, and lighter Roval Traverse alloy wheels without having to shell out for a carbon frame to save a few grams.

When it debuted last year, the lowest-priced carbon Stumpy was the Stumpjumper EVO Comp at $4100. But now that bike has climbed up to $5k, making the new alloy version seem like an even better deal.

The S-Works carbon frameset itself also added an extra couple hundred bucks, now selling for $3200.

And the top-level S-Works Stumpjumper EVO that we thought was eye-watering just under ten grand… now it’s a full $11,000.

How’s an aluminum bike sound now?

I’ve always loved Spesh…but they are singlehandedly driving up prices throughout the entire industry. They are pricing out most of us regular folks and making it impossible for young entry level riders to break into the sport. I remember the days when you can get an M4 stumpy for less than $2K! YT and Canyon are looking better and better.
