Washington, D.C., will once again play host to one of North America’s biggest (and one of our favorite) ’cross weekends, as the 2025 UCI Pan-American Cyclocross Championships and UCI C2 DCCX are officially confirmed for November 8–9.

Weren’t they already confirmed? Yes, but… as originally reported in the CX Hairs Bulletin (you should check them out btw). There was a slight scare when the ongoing government shutdown threatened to derail the cyclocross DCCX Pan-American Championship. Why? The race takes place at the Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH), on federal property, managed by federal employees.

Shutdown Chaos Meets Cyclocross Persistence

When the U.S. Federal Government shutdown began, DCCX organizers suddenly found themselves in a bind. The Armed Forces Retirement Home, where the event is held, sits on federal property. What does that mean? Well, pretty much all the team’s direct contacts were immediately furloughed. That meant no emails, no calls, no official communication. Meaning there was uncertainty whether Pan-Ams could even take place at its longtime home.

Rather than gamble on bureaucracy, the DCCX team went full race mode. They scrambled to secure backup venues, initiated permitting processes for two separate locations—paperwork that usually takes six weeks or more, and pushed it through in less than three.

For a few tense weeks, the organizers were effectively planning three different races at once — all while trying to keep racers and sponsors in the loop.

Crisis Averted

Fortunately, after some rapid coordination with the remaining AFRH administrators, everything came together last week. The race is officially greenlit at its traditional venue inside the Armed Forces Retirement Home grounds, a setting that’s become synonymous with East Coast ’cross.

The AFRH administration recognized what many already know: DCCX has been one of the best-run cyclocross weekends in the country since its debut in 2008. I’ve raced it many times and can attest to the excellence of both the course and the production’s professionalism. The organizers’ commitment meant no additional burden on the AFRH staff or resources, and that helped secure the green light.

What It Means for Racers

For racers, the good news is simple — nothing changes. The Pan-American Championships and DCCX UCI C2 will go off exactly as planned, on their original dates, at their original home.

If you haven’t registered yet, don’t wait; registration closes November 5. Whether you’re lining up to race or planning to spectate, this is one of those weekends that makes the fall ’cross calendar special: autumn colors, deep fields, and the D.C. skyline as your backdrop. We’ll be there reporting, shouting, riding, so come say hi!

Government shutdown? I’d be more concerned about the “war zone” in DC! I guess they couldn’t use Portland OR. either…..
