The Ahooga Modular Bike is a simple urban commuter concept to create a solid, reasonably lightweight bike that with optional front & rear racks can be a fully-functional compact cargo bike hauling kids or groceries around town. Now the Modular bike gets a new step-thru frame option, together with a limited edition reflective finishing kit to make sure you are seen zipping around town.
Ahooga Modular Bike lightweight, compact urban commuter bike
If you are looking for a multi-purpose urban commuter, the Ahooga Modular Bike offers the choice of a standard frame that you pedal on your own or an e-bike version with a battery integrated into the optional oversized downtube version. Then from there, either standard or e-versions share similar burly alloy frame construction with twin toptubes that transition into seatstays and provide solid mounting points for racks.
Racks are the heart of the Modular Bike, with the optional Rack pack of oversized tubular racks that bolt directly to the stays & sides of the headtube, able to haul 50kg (110lb) out back & another 20kg (44lb) up front. That’s a lot of hauling – enough in the Ahooga ecosystem for two kids on the rear carrier or one up front, or pretty much all the groceries you can imagine in one trip.
Ahooga also offers a Space Saver Pack for the Modular Bike with removable pedals and a folding stem that makes it ideal for use in cramped urban environments, able to be stored out of the way in a hallway, studio apartment, or cluttered garage. (We’ve also featured the original folding Ahooga Bike from the Brussels-based bike maker for more compact storage.)
Tech details
Ahooga makes the 26″ wheeled Modular Bike (up to 2.5″ tire clearance) in classic city bike one-size-fits-all geometry thanks to plenty of standover and an upright riding position. But now, the special edition step-thru version makes that one size even more comfortable for a wider range of city bikers from 1.6-2m tall (5’3″-6’6″).
The Modular e-Bike is available with a 250W pedal-assist motor powered by a 317Wh battery in the downtube, or in a separate more expensive 250W hybrid e-bike version with a regenerative motor & 160Wh battery inside the large rear hub which does not require an external battery and is “self charging” (while going downhill).
Pricing, availability & limited edition Reflective Low Step version
The Modular Bike has a current leadtime of 4-8 weeks due to its high demand after being introduced last year, with some models pushing that back by a couple week more. Pricing starts at 1150€ for the version you pedal with an 8-speed cassette (claimed to weigh 10kg), 1400€ when you add the racks (now 12kg). E-bike versions start from 1870€ (16kg) and climb to around 3150€ depending on the motor & racks selected.
The new Reflective Low Step Modular Bike has just been debuted this week and hasn’t officially gone on sale yet. Only 300 reflective bikes will be available in this limited edition (click here to get your name on the list) and they will sell for 1995€ with the standard 36V, 250W, 317Wh e-bike drive and the reflective Rack Pack. The reflective model also offers an optional electronic wheel lock to make it suitable for small-scale corporate bike sharing.
