Specialized has an all-new Levo R that’s easy to mistake for its bigger Levo 4 sibling at first. Its carbon frame looks almost identical. It has the same two powerful Specialized & S-Works motor options, and the same multiple battery size options. Yet a closer look reveals a lighter build and 2cm less travel front & rear. But, this is less about scaling back to make a shorter and slightly lighter ebike. And it’s also not just about making a full 29er eMTB, either.

Instead, the new Levo R is more about building a machine for riders looking for more playful speed and maxed-out maneuverability! Specialized calls it “The Rally Car of e-MTBs”, as a bit of segmentation takes over eMTB to make sure more riders get on the optimal travel for the type of trails they actually ride.

I would call it an ideal mix of shorter travel, shred-ready geometry, and max motor power for riders looking to put as much into an ebike as its pedal assist is going to put out. This is an eMTB for riders who still want to feel the trail, just with extra power to help get you back to the top of the mountain for more back-to-back laps.

With the same great ‘SuperNatural’ motors, with the extra power like the all-mountain Levo 4s that just got boosted to a max of 850W last week, and just 20mm less travel front and rear, it’d be simple to write this off as just a less aggressive trail ebike. But, this combination of max power, mid-travel & lighter weight combined with a still highly-capable geometry makes for an incredibly fun ebike for riders looking to push it hard.

Specialized says the R stands for Rally, but it’s hard to not equate it with a more racy on the bike feel. It’s the same Levo 4 generation 3.1 motors as the longer 150/160mm model, so you aren’t really going to get faster up the hills or make up more time going down either. But with an overall lighter weight platform, lighter builds as low as 18.8kg, and slightly reduced travel, you’ll feel a bit faster rallying down the same trails with the Levo R’s more connected ride.

What’s new?

What’s new is almost all focused around shorter travel.

But that also allowed Specialized to build the new Levo R frames lighter, with a new FACT 11M carbon layup and carbon upper link that sheds a whopping 530g off the Levo 4. It also gets a full 29er wheel setup to improve rollover and speed with the shorter trail travel (only a mullet in the smallest size to ensure uncompromised fit.)

Suspension-wise, the Levo R opts for a simpler Genie air shock without a piggyback. But it’s still a Genie, so you get two separate air chambers inside that combine through the travel to give a more linear feel through the early to mid travel for plenty of predictable support. Then, Genie delivers a progressive curve at the end to make bottom outs almost impossible no matter how big a hit you take, as long as you get sag right to start.

From a complete ebike perspective, the shorter travel Levo R family also means lighter complete builds. Dialed back for travel means a shift from 38mm to 36mm fork platforms, plus lighter wheels & cockpits, too. In the end, the lightest Levo R is now a full 2.4kg lighter than the complete Levo 4.

Rally eMTB geometry

All that lighter weight and shorter travel also gets a lower center of gravity for its rally ride-tuned eMTB geometry, as well.

The new Levo R is just 0.5° steeper at the head tube to get down the hills, while it has the same steep 77° seat post for efficient climbing. Fit is pretty similar too, with just 5mm shorter Reach, 8mm lower Stack, and an 11mm lower bottom bracket height balancing with the reduced travel. But even though it’s a bit steeper up front, it gets 12mm longer chainstays to fit the bigger rear wheel, bringing back some high-speed stability.

Just like the Levo 4, the Levo R is highly adjustable for those who love to tinker, and set the ebike up for how they ride trails. That means, the same three-position +/-1° headset tube, two-position +5mm hi/low bottom bracket flip-chip, and two-position -6mm short/long chainstay flip-
chip adjustability (+ or – indicating change from standard geometry).

The motor will match the riders watts, you pedal 100w, the motor will kick in 100w, you up to 150w, it will do 150w… up to the motor max.

Sure its more expensive than other eMTBs with similar spec, but on the bright side its also heavier.

That’s because it has a bigger party you twit. And not much for comparable bikes out there at all really unless you compare to mid power. Even then they get the weight down by going to a smaller battery.

high-output 58V system Wow! most everyone else (bosch, shimano, etc) is only 36V

Many are 48V. Everyone in this game loves higher numbers. It’s almost like E-MTBs are helping owners to compensate for something?

Higher voltage is more efficient. Smaller battery for a given amount of watt-hours and Easier on all electronics components. The end result ^should* be smaller and lighter e-system components for a given power output. Bosch achieves pretty incredible results with their lower voltage.

I don’t get it. Fox 36 SL, Traverse SL carbon rims and motive brakes on a 50 lb bike? What could go wrong? I’ve been a fan of the Levo SL for its similar to non-e-bike feel, I think improving that platform would have made more sense.

Lots of former pros and current pros training on e-bikes. The ones I know personally are getting crazy fit because they can build up a base for the season without riding stupid slow. Throw in many can be synced with a HRM and you have the ultimate training machine.

All these companies that are making super expensive e-bikes/bikes will get in trouble. $10k-15k? They are just digging themself a hole in the ground. Instead of investing in production/efficiency to make bikes more affordable and increase their sales, they are alienating most of their customers.

I have a Spesh Creo and the Micro Tune is fantastic. While I have the ability to buy 15k bikes I lack the will. I suspect most will be discounted at the end of the day.

Thanks to bike companies following the automotive playbook of slapping much higher price tags while offering longer financing plans, just about anyone has the ability to buy atrociously overpriced bikes. That’s how bike companies are staying afloat… For now.

I’ve got an S-Works Levo SL 150/160mm travel bike that is 36lbs…. It’s actually light enough that I rarely use the motor and when I do it’s mostly in Eco+ (Custom tuned mode). So a shorter travel and heavier bike for more money isn’t a great tradeoff for a little more torque and power. But hey, I guess the Big S has to figure out something to market since they are losing market share daily!

If you had more experience with e-bikes than your SL (and bikes in general) you’d know exactly why this spec is so damn perfect.

Oh and btw, take out the main battery and run just the range extender and you have a mid power ebike for the cost of a range extender. Or run as is for maximum range when coupled with the custom tune you’ve spec’d for your Levo SL. Think 40+ mile MTB rides easy. Especially if you don’t age much elevation gain.
