The new Detour Cloud Cap collaboration between Ass Savers & Gramm Tourpacking is as simply functional as it is niche – a cycling cap with a built-in neck scarf to protect you from the unrelenting sun. Some days on the bike there’s really just no escape from the sun. And since Ass Savers & Gramm couldn’t find the cap they wanted, they decided to make their own and share it with the bikepacking world…
Ass Savers & Gramm adventure bikepacking Detour Cloud Cap
Sure, most cyclists will make do fine with some sunscreen to protect the back of the neck & ears on sunny rides. But if you are setting off on a multi-day adventure bikepacking ride or race where you may be out, fully exposed in the hot sun for days or weeks at a time – like at the Silk Road Mountain Race that is crossing Kyrgyzstan right now, or the Atlas Mountain Race across Morocco in October – it’s hard to beat a headcloth.
So if you are fine looking a bit like a Bedouin, the simple 4-panel made-in-Italy polyester cycling cap should offer some respite.
The Detour Cloud Cap is made to be worn on its own or under a helmet. The 34cm long rear neck shade has a slick satin inner finish that’s meant to be soft sliding & flapping against your skin. Without a helmet, it’s light enough to move in the breeze. Under helmet straps, you’ll likely need to pull it away from or over your ears to keep air moving.
But the idea like a traditional desert headcloth is to both allowing airflow and also keep your sweat from evaporating too quickly so you stay cooler and slow down dehydration under the hot sun.
“Truly a must have if you are pedaling under a blazing sun,” the Detour Cloud Cap sells for 29€ direct from either Ass Savers or Gramm Tourpacking. It’s available only in this pink & purple cloud swirl pattern for now, designed to camouflage salty sweat stains.
The Detour line was created by Ass Savers as an ongoing series of collaborative projects to play with new ideas around bikepacking from many different perspectives in the cycling industry. Who can guess what they’ll come up with next?
