Photo submitted by Gary Patrick, “In light of the COVID19 outbreak, and directives to practice ‘social distancing,’ my alternative Saint Patrick’s Day celebration was a solo ride in a low traffic locale. This photo was taken at the Naval Live Oaks Area of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, near Gulf Breeze, Florida. Santa Rosa Sound and the Bob Sikes Bridge to Pensacola Beach are in the background. The bike is my 1997 Specialized Hardrock AF-XS, which I have affectionately named ‘Large Marge.'”

Another gorgeous place to see. I am a retired USFWS Officer and wildlife refuge manager (I am also retired Navy). I once was stationed at a refuge in coastal Georgia (Blackbeard Island) that had a similar history as Naval Oaks. Acquired in the 1800s to provide live oak timber in the repair and building of US Navy sailing ships. Live oaks are beautiful in their own right, not to mention a valued wildlife resource. As we all sit sequestered due to this virus…..I so much enjoy “riding vicariously” with my fellow cycling enthusiasts by looking at these photos. Nice job, and a nice bike, Gary! I hope the oysters I used to get down there….are still as “sweet” as I remember them!

Captain, we were there on Spring Break. The whole Covid-19 situation was just emerging. We contemplated cancelling, but since our accommodation was an airbnb townhouse outside the tourist zone, we decided to go anyway, and mitigate our potential exposure by staying away from the tourist spots, including restaurants, and cooking all our own meals. Unfortunately, that meant I didn’t get a chance to try any local oysters
