This Team Qhubeka x Hunt collaboration is a rare opportunity to help out a charity, buy a unique piece of cycling gear actually raced in the Tour de France, or even just win that same set of Tour-ridden wheels with no purchase necessary. Team Qhubeka NextHash rode these 10 sets of Hunt 54 Aerodynamicist Carbon Disc wheels for the final stage of the Tour De France in Paris yesterday, and now you can buy 9 of those ultra-limited edition wheelsets, with 100% of all proceeds being donated to the Qhubeka Foundation. The last set goes to one lucky contest entrant!
Qhubeka x Hunt 54 Aerodynamicist Carbon Disc Tour-raced wheels
For sure this is a promotional project, with Hunt drumming up publicity around their relatively affordable carbon road bike wheels in their first Tour de France debut, the biggest stage in cycling. (Hunt also was testing some next-gen prototype carbon-spoke wheels in the Tour’s French mountains!) But this is pretty much a Win-Win-Win situation for everyone involved.
Amateur cyclists can purchase 1 of only 10 limited edition Qhubeka x Hunt 54 Aerodynamicist Carbon Disc wheelsets in existence, with limited edition Team Qhubeka graphics. They’ll get the unique story that their pair of aero road wheels were actually raced by pros in the Tour de France. And at just £1089 / $1549 / 1409€, they cost just a few bucks more than a regular, non-Tour-raced set of wheels.
The £9801 / $13,941 / 12,681€ from the sale of nine wheelsets will be donated to the Qhubeka Foundation in its entirety as part of their #QHandUp campaign, with the goal of “moving people forward with bicycles in Africa”. People earn bicycles through Qhubeka’s programs to act as a tool to improve access to schools, healthcare & continued employment. Qhubeka says, “In the face of extreme and persistent poverty, bicycles can change lives by helping to address socioeconomic challenges at the most basic level – helping people to get where they need to go.”
Plus, the 10th wheelset is just going to be given away to a lucky subscriber to Hunt Road’s ‘journal‘ newsletter, as long as you sign up before July 25th, here.
Hunt 54 Aerodynamicist wheels – Tech details
Hunt’s 54 Aerodynamicist Carbon Disc wheels combine a lot of tech we’ve already covered before. The 54mm deep, 20mm wide internal, 29mm wide external rims are the same as we saw on their first Carbon Spoke aero wheels, featuring wide aerodynamic shaping inherited from their “World’s Fastest” 48 Limitless Aero Disc wheels. The result is a wind tunnel, and now Tour de France-proven, fast set of full carbon, hooked tubeless disc brake road wheels.
The centerlock disc brake only, custom-etched Sprint Disc 7.5° engagement hub, 12mm thru-axle wheels have a real weight of 1576g for the pair, and are available with Shimano HG, SRAM XD-R, or Campagnolo N3W freehub bodies.
Qhubeka x Hunt 54 Aerodynamicist – Availability
If you want to buy one of the four remaining (as of midday July 19) Qhubeka x Hunt wheelsets, you can pre-order today. And once Hunt gets the Tour-ridden wheels back in their warehouse and boxed up, they’ll ship out in the first week of August. If you wanted to buy the non-limited edition sets, your pre-order will wait until the end of August to ship.
Hunt co-founder Tom Marchment spoke of the project, “Hunt was drawn to Team Qhubeka NextHash not only for their incredible level of performance and professionalism, but also the work they do in supporting the Qhubeka charity’s mission to change lives through bicycles. This project was a small way for Hunt to help further that mission by directly supporting and promoting the Qhubeka charity, while offering riders the very unique opportunity to own wheels used by pros in the 2021 Tour de France.”
