Cannondale’s popular SuperSix EVO road bike sheds weight in an exclusive special edition Leichtbau frameset. Dropping another 10% off the already-light hi-mod carbon frame, the new SuperSix EVO Leichtbau serves as a base to build up the lightest Cannondale road bikes. But just 200 framesets will be made, so act fast to go fast!

Leichtbau means lightweight construction in German, and that’s exactly what the SuperSix EVO Leichtbau delivers. Developed to celebrate 50 years of Cannondale race-ready performance, the SuperSix EVO Leichtbau sheds 90g off the production hi-mod SuperSix EVO raced in bright colors by EF Education and toured on by Lachlan Morton.

But refining that already-light carbon layup isn’t easy, so the new Leichtbau frame isn’t just lighter, it’s also more expensive and limited to just 200 pieces.

Tech details

The limited edition bike is laid up by hand in the same mold as the standard hi-mod SuperSix EVO. The resulting Cannondale SuperSix EVO Leichtbau frame weighs just 750g for a medium frame with its minimal raw paint finish with bronze & chrome paint detailing, and all of its key machined alloy hardware. That makes this the “lightest disc road bike frameset that Cannondale has ever made”.

Tech-wise, the Leichtbau gets all the same features as the standard SuperSix EVO Hi-mod. Easy-to-manage KNØT Integrated hidden cable routing that exists outside of the headset just at the top of the headtube. Chopped off airfoil tube shaping throughout that reduces aerodynamic drag, while retaining relatively small tubing profiles, light weight, and rider comfort.

Vibration damping dropped SAVE seatstays, 12mm Speed Release thru-axles, flat mount disc brakes, PF30a bottom bracket, and an integrated proprietary aero SAVE seatpost. All of that, plus clearance for 30mm all-road tires to boost rider comfort, grip, control, and to lower rolling resistance.

Cannondale, please. No one wants a $5k frame with a Las Vegas steakhouse paint job. All we want is a CAAD15 with a non-sloping top tube.

“Leichtbau means lightweight construction in German”

Yeah, how do you say “we want a threaded bottom bracket” in German?

Why would you want a threaded bottom bracket?

Easy to service with basic tools and they tend not to creak as much as press-fit. TBH with the right prepwork and quality bb a press-fit isn’t bad.

The creak drove me to buy a Token BB

I bought a Token Ninja BB for Shimano and replaced the FSA crank with a Shimano R7000 105 Crank. One of the best upgrades. Swapped out the Mavic rims for carbon fiber rims. Replaced the crap seat with a SMP Well saddle. Love riding my upgraded CAAD12.

We’ll likely see a new frame next year. These “special edition” frames are one way to keep the interest up towards the end of their run. Hopefully the next itineration will get ride of the dreaded BB30a.

Quality control is the problem. Adding threads just makes QC issues worse.

Did they fix the problem of head tubes exploding when you turn the integrated fork with tabs that prevented it from turning more than 45*s?

Yes, they added a metal insert. See Luescher Teknik’s video.

What would the weight gain if I strip a Supersix Evo from its paint? My humble amateurish guess is more than 90g.

Also interesting that they seem to fit a zero setback seatpost instead of the 15mm standard.

Is 750g lightweight for an unpainted frame?

I would like to see a compared MTB Cannondale SL2 versus Specialized Chisel Comp.
