Recently, DeFeet has added two new items to their Bespoke line, the Waterproof Jacket and DeTour Vest. Essentially, the Bespoke line is their own in-house Kickstarter.
Simply put, DeFeet creates a new sock or bag or jersey that would be too costly or difficult to produce through standard channels and instead gives riders the option to back it. If the product (DeFeet calls each item a campaign) gets fully funded then it goes into production. If the demand isn’t there, the product doesn’t come to life. Those products that do make it to production will not be available in stores due to the highly limited production. So far, the line has featured mostly socks with a jersey, t-shirt, and wallet also in the mix.
Now, DeFeet is entering the more technical segment of outer layers with the Waterproof jacket and DeTour vest…
The Waterproof Jacket uses a fabric from a major US manufacturer (DeFeet won’t say who and claim to have a very limited amount of this fabric). This mystery fabric has three layers- a soft inner layer, a middle layer that wicks away sweat, and a 100% water and windproof outer layer. Interestingly, what it does not have is bonded seams, which DeFeet says is over-engineering and creates your own personal sauna.
The cut is specific to the riding position with the sleeves using three panels to get the right fit. There is a rear stash pocket for valuables and a two way zipper to control your temperature. Cost is $215, or $230 for international orders.
Keeping with the theme of weather protection, the DeTour vest also uses a mystery fabric (likely the same as the jacket) to protect you from the elements. The front panel is wind and water proof and the high collar should help protect you.
However, the open mesh back is designed to release heat rather than keep you dry. The three back pockets will let you carry extra items you may need on a long day. DeFeet says this vest is highly packable and great for cold descents. Cost is $110 for domestic orders and $125 for international.
You have until July 20 to back either of these campaigns and you can only back one campaign at a time. If your chosen item does get full funding, production time is typically six to eight weeks.
