EB17: Ghost Roket X 27.5+ hardtail shifts to Pinion for backcountry adventure

We actually saw the aluminum Roket last summer when Ghost first added the idea of a backcountry adventure hardtail to their RO AMR & H AMR full suspension bikes. But at the time, Ghost was just talking of adding a Pinion gearbox version of the 27.5+ bike. They’ve since made it available as a mid-season 2017 bike, decked out with the same custom bikepacking bags made for them by AcePac.

The Roket X starts with the same aluminum, plus size frame & 2.8″ rubber as the standard Roket, but gets a special bottom bracket casting to house the 12 speed Pinion C1.12 gearbox for backcountry reliability. It does have a standard Boost thru-axle rear end (like the original RO AMR, now H AMR X), so it uses a bottom bracket mounted chain tensioner, which seems to us a bit perilously exposed vs. locating it either at the dropout or even along the chainstay.

The backcountry bike is available in a single spec for 3500€ with a 130mm RockShox Yari RC fork, Guide R brakes and a KS Lev dropper. Of course outfitted for adventure, the bike includes a 15mm thru-axle, Boost-spaced SP front hub dynamo, paired to Tout Terrain’s latest The Plug USB charging top cap so you can keep your electronics running far from home.

The Roket X also gets the same AMR family bikepacking bag system, here custom shaped for the three standard hardtail frame sizes.

In fact, the bags actually are included with the bike standard (except in the US & Canada, sorry.) That includes a saddle bag (designed to slide over the dropper post), a half frame bag, and the handlebar roll, with detachable bar top bag.

That tensioner “solution” is beyond a haggard afterthought. Why not either a sliding/swinging dropout system or if they really want a tensioner setup (but why would you?) why not a standard derailleur hanger setup.

Yeah, any bike designed to be single ring/single cog should have tensioning built in to the frame. tensioners like that are just stupid.

The reason to put it on the BB rather than where a derailleur would be is having it swing backward out of the way if something hits it, vs breaking like a derailleur would.

Thing I don’t get: the chain is way too long. If you look at Zerode bikes, they use the same idler and it’s barely noticeable.

Although i wish they used a sliding dropout for chain tension issues, the chain tension device in the front is much smarter. You have less potential for smacking it on rocks and such. This is too rad

Agreed. Tensioners needed, would rather use belt drive with pinion. And who rides a 27.5+? We have been on 29+ for soo long now. Why go backwards.

I’ve been riding a standard 29er for about 10 years and recently drank the kool-aid and got a 27.5+. Bike is amazing. SO much fun yet faster than a 29er. My wheels actually have a smaller moment of rotation than a standard 29er wheel.

Dropper post and saddle bag obviously do not match. Presence of the bag will interfere with the post’s operation. It is clear from the very first picture, and this is why I keep my backpacking bicycle with a regular post.
