EB17: Tufo cooks up Tubeless Ready mountain bike & road tires, plus new road wheels

Czech-made Tufo tires have long been known for their durable vulcanized tubular tires, but for the last several years have been expanding out with new clinchers being manufactured in Europe. Now they are taking that a step further with a pair of new TR tires for both mountain and road biking. They’ve even added a new pair of carbon clincher road wheels to their previous tubular offerings.

XC11 TR 29″ tubeless cross-country mountain bike tires

For their first ever clincher mountain bike tire, the Tufo XC11 TR mixes a bit of their XC5 & XC6 tread designs to create a low-profile, fast rolling tread for cross-country and marathon mountain bike racing. The tire uses a similar high thread count construction (Tufo claims 210tpi sidewalls & 375tpi under the tread) to their tubulars for a tire able to work well at low pressures. Their first off-road tubeless tire is available only in a 29×2.25″ size with a claimed weight of 700g per tire. It uses a bead-to-bead Vectran anti puncture barrier, a soft 60a oil+polymer blend rubber compound with activated silica for a balance of wet conditions traction and reasonable wearing, and an anti-snake bite protection layer at the foldable aramid bead.

Comtura 3 TR tubeless road bike tires

At the same time as the TR tubeless ready XC tire, Tufo has given their all around Comtura road racing tire the tubeless treatment as well. It shares similar tech to the mountain tire with the bead-to-bead Vectran anti puncture barrier, anti-snake bite protection, folding aramid bead, and the same overlapped 210/375tpi construction. The Comtura 3 TR uses a 66a SPC Silica rubber compound and a tread design with prominent sipes on the shoulders to aid in cornering over irregular road surfaces. The tubeless Comtura 3 TR will be available in a 270g 25mm version rated for 75-115psi and a 300g 28mm tire rated for 60-100psi.

Carbona CL30 & CL45 carbon clincher rim brake road wheels

On the wheel front, Tufo has added two new carbon clincher options – the Carbona CL30 & CL45 – to their previous tubular only road wheels. Tufo had told us in the past that they only introduced the open mold 30mm & 45mm deep carbon wheels as an avenue to deliver their tires. A lot of buyers were looking to have their tires pre-glued, ready to ride, but now that Tufo is selling more & more road clinchers it made sense for them to offer a pair of carbon clincher wheelsets as well. For now the Carbona CLs are not tubeless ready, in fact they are pretty old school with 16mm internal widths, and are being sold as a set with Tufo’s all around 25mm wide Comtura Duo 25 road racing tire installed with traditional light butyl tubes.
