EB18: Granite Design Rock and Roll tool set joins their Rock Band

Looking to make it a bit easier to bring your tools along, Granite Design has a new addition for their Rock Band. For those unfamiliar, their Rock Band is a simple velcro strap that’s designed to easily carry a spare tube and CO2 inflator on your frame. Now to make that strap even more useful, they’ve added a new ratcheting tool kit.

On the outside, the velcro pouch has a built in loop that is designed to integrate with the Rock Band.

And on the inside, you’ll find a small ratchet wrench with an extension that can be used on either end of the tool. The ratcheting end has the same spring loaded bit holder that has become popular on tools from Topeak, Presta Cycle, and more, while the other end has a magnetic socket to hold bits or extensions.

The Rock and Roll kit includes 9 bits, all of which has small chamfers to help them stay in the tool. The pouch also has a spot for a spare chain link, though it’s not included. You can pick up the whole tool kit for $23, and if you want a Rock Band as well, it’s another $6.99.

That ratchet looks just like the Victorinox ratchet handle

but the Granite complete set is much cheaper and includes the bits you really need. Good job.

This style tool seems to be getting more popular. Topeak has had something like this for a while, Victorinox also has a bike tool, There’s also the Mineral Design Mini Bar, They all give you essentially full size allen wrenches without having to carry around a full set. And they’re very flexible- if you really needed, you could add different sizes or even nutdriver bits.

Weight? Seems like it would be heavy with the steel handle.

It’s not even up on their website yet.

That ratchet looks a lot like the Victorinox hex ratchet, but the Granite set is cheaper, has the right bits, and the bits aren’t sticking out.

Good job.

I might have gotten it if I hadn’t already started putting together my own set with a Craftsman Z-Driver wrench. Also I don’t like ratchets because they seem like a pain when trying to loosen then immediately tighten something: straightening a stem, adjusting rim brake pads, taking up slack in a cable, etc.

I guess there’s the bit holder on the other end of the wrench, and you could use the extension in the ratchet head for torque, so you don’t need to use the ratchet if you don’t want.
