At FFWD, their goal is to “produce the best wheels to make you go fast.” Naturally, that involves a deep section carbon rim, but FFWD put their own twist on the design with their DARC or Double Arc rim shape. Their claim is that this shape reduces drag around the wheel in both frontal and cross wind conditions by creating a faster airflow over the rim and away from the spokes. Previously available on their mid to high range wheels, FFWD is bringing the technology to an all new price point with the new Tyro wheelset.
Along with the DARC profile, you’ll find a 45mm deep rim with a 19mm internal / 27mm external width. Using a hooked profile, the rims are tubeless ready using a 25mm wide tubeless tape and valves. Recommended tire size ranges from 23mm to 40mm which is why FFWD claims that the wheels are multi-purpose. They’re great for road bikes, but also should work for gravel bikes with smaller tires.
Built with 24 straight pull DT Competition spokes front and rear with DT Pro Lock brass nipples, the wheels include their FFWD Ratchet disc brake hubs which have freehub options for everything except Shimano Microspline.
Out of the box, the wheels are set up for 12 x 100 and 12 x 142mm though end caps are available to fit most standard sizes. The wheels have a claimed weight of 795/900g F/R, or 1695g for the set and carry a 265lb/120kg rider weight limit.
Priced at €999 with free shipping, the wheels even include pre-installed tape, tubeless valves, and a padded wheel bag. Available this April, you can find them in shops or online.
