The name of one of the newest flavors in the GU Brew line will surely turn some heads, but it gets the point across. The recently reformulated beverage is all about electrolytes and less about carbs with a new lighter formula. We love that they are not using any artificial sweeteners and instead use a 50:50 ratio of simple to complex carbs. Packing only 70 calories per serving, the drink is more in line with recent thoughts on drinking your electrolytes but eating your calories.

About that Tastefully Nude…

It may sound weird, but the crystal clear Brew is delicious. Made with a very simple, clean taste, Tastefully Nude is something you could drink all day and not get tired of. Other flavors include Lemon Tea, watermelon, Blueberry Pomegranate, lemon-lime and orange. Brew is sold in boxes of 24 stick packs for $32.40, or a 24 serving Canister for $18.00. If you’re headed to the 6th annual Levi’s GranFondo, you’ll have a chance to test out the new Brew formula as GU is the official Hydration Sponsor of the event. Whether you’re tackling the 103 mile Gran route, the 65 mile Medio or even 32 mile Piccolo, rest stations along the way will be armed with gallons of the new Brew.

On the GU and Chomp side, GU has some awesome new flavors including the addictive Caramel Macchiato. If you love Salted Carmel GU, watch out – you’ll be buying this by the truck load. Like a cup of coffee, the gel boasts 40mg of caffeine. Other new flavors include Salted Watermelon GU, and the new Raspberry Chomp with 40mg of caffeine.

Damn, I am one of the few who likes drinking my calories, especially Gu roctane drink. If I bring actual food, it’s going to be food and water.

Rico,

I’m with you on that one. I loved the original raspberry pomegranate.

Not sure why they are using so much fructose in this blend… It’s definitely limited by how much the liver can metabolize. Yes, a 1-1 blend with glucose shows the speediest absorption, but it’s still not that fast. There’s a reason straight fructose sits so low on the GI scale. Referring to maltodextrin as a complex carb is ridiculous. When will sports drink producers ever fess up to this?!

I love the idea of lighter tasting drinks, but a 3% carb solution is a little too light. This definitely needs to be supplemented with more calories. Yay, more stuff to carry on the bike!

So their R&D consists of knocking off Osmo and Skratch. Very well done.

I’m 100% sure this has nothing to do with their R&D and everything to do with their marketing department.

Nice stuff for the mothers that work out on the spinning bike once a week in order to try to loose some weight.

The whole ‘eat your calories’ story sounds rather silly to me, since it is all mixed up in your stomach anyway. It might be favorable in a research setting, but I doubt they have tried it during racing in Western Europe. Finding the time to drink is often already a problem let alone you’re going to get a bar out of your pocket when you’re in an echelon fighting for your position…

I agree with Mark, above. If I’m “in it to win it” I’m getting 90% of my calories in my drink. If I’m out on a less intense adventure, I’ll stop for a sandwich at the top of the biggest descent of the day. Downhills are a GREAT to do some digesting!

Marketing definitely did a great job with the name- I love it! Not sure how a marketing team would have anything to do with a formula? Doesn’t make sense…

Looks pretty tasty to me- I’ll be trying this soon
