Thanks to a number of light weight parts, torque wrenches have become common place among mechanics’ work benches, especially those capable of low Newton-Meters. Individual hand held torque wrenches have been around for awhile and many of them are based on the Torqkey – an auto release, preset torque mechanism first introduced to the bike scene by Ritchey Components. Now PrestaCycle is stepping up with their own branded Torqkeys that will sold in 7 different torque presets.

Capable of running different bits, the PrestaCycle torque wrenches will be some of the cheapest available…

Offered in 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, and 12 Nm presets, David with PrestaCycle told us that since the torque setting is only reached in the clockwise direction you can use these to unthread bolts without risking damage to the tool. That does mean that these wrenches will only work on standard threaded fasteners, not reverse thread. Individually, each wrench will sell for $15.95. They will also be available as a set of three different torque wrenches and a 20 piece bit set for $49.95, or all 7 wrenches plus two different 20 piece bit sets for $99.95.

David has been working on a number of other projects as well, though the limited edition PrestaLever II is the only one he’s ready to talk about. The pink Breast Cancer Awareness lever will be sold along side the standard red and available for the same price of $4.95 per lever or 3 for $12.95. There should be some more exiting product news from PrestaLever in the coming year. Stay tuned.

I’m sorry, but no tire iron will ever be as quick to get a tire back on as my hands will. Just a fact.

I really like to see these relatively affordable torque keys – added to my tools wishlist.
FTR:
nm = nanometer … good for measuring the latest silicon gate width of flash memory
Nm = Newton-meter… good for measuring torque on carbon bike bits.

Any idea what the tolerance might be for the torque wrenches? Pretty good price for those!

Sounds like a winning solution for at home wrenching on your bike. I don’t mind ”Torqueing” with my arm-o-meter on my alloy bike but if I had a carbon bike. I would definitely get a torque wrench and those are pretty affordable.

When will the preset torque wrenches be available?

Mounting tires without tire levers has almost nothing to do with forearm strength gained from excessive fapping. Conversely it has everything to do with technique. The Beads of the tire have to be continually moved towards the center on the rim to give the bead more room to slide over the sidewall of the rim. I have done literally thousands of tube and tire replacements and have only had a handful of them require the use of levers.

Fapping has everything to do with technique, too.
“Continually moved,” “more room to slide,” “I have done literally thousands,” sounds like fapping to me.

The torque keys look like a good alternative to the Ritchey key for different settings but it would be nice if they color coded them to make it easier to see which key is which torque.

@Skeeter
The SI requires a space or half-high dot between the unit symbols of a compound unit.

@Ham-planet – Indeed, but they don’t bother with the dot on the tool labels, and I didn’t feel it was worth the effort to hunt down the dot for the web. I think the space option looks weird, so I neglected that option. These first-world problems are abundant. 🙂
