There aren’t too many flattop chain options. Honestly, I think SRAM is the only one (YBN makes one) with the pure flat top edition, which they developed for their 12-speed road groups. Yes, you can use the KMC X12 to replace a current flattop setup, but if you want the smooth look, you’ll have to buy a SRAM chain. However, it appears that KMC has a SRAM-compatible flattop design in the works, and it looks to be dropping soon.

KMC 12 Speed Flattop Chain – What is it?

We know that the new KMC 12-speed flattop will be an option for SRAM riders who might want an alternative to the SRAM chains.

That was the first thing I asked (that would rule, right?) and was left with zero speculation. The quick link will be a single-use-only piece, much like the current SRAM Flattop offerings. However, the chains will come pre-waxed (like the newer KMC waxed models) and with an all-new KMC flattop quick link.

KMC is keeping this one pretty close to the chest. It’s uncertain if an “X12SL-FT” model would accompany the release (the chain in question looks more like a standard X12 model), and the same goes for pricing.

Availibility

Whether this is an upgrade or an adjacent option for SRAM riders, one thing is certain: it’s nice to have another option on the table. I’d be set and sold if we could only get this in GOLD.

Look for the KMC 12-speed Flattop Chains available midsummer at your local shop and online at KMCChain.us.

11-speed Red uses a regular 11-speed chain that is currently available from SRAM and KMC. The flat-top chain is not compatible with 11-speed drivetrains.

How did they get around SRAM’s patent on the flat top chain? (https://patents.google.com/patent/US11867255B2/en)

I would urge you to read the kmc X12 product page. Explicitly not flat top drivetrain compatible. For a time there was ambiguity in the language they used, but they have come to their senses (as should anyone who doesn’t understand flattop chains in 2025) and realized they need to be more direct in their wording.

The fact that Flattop chains have larger rollers is not news in 2025. It’s time that articles like this draw upon common knowledge when talking about compatibility. It’s layered, and sometimes nuanced, but it’s not challenging to master, and arguably it’s your job to do so if you’re going to write about it.

Is it faster than the SRAM chain?
