Continuing in their pursuit of the perfect bearings, Kogel has launched a new product range with a big claim. The new CR or Corrosion Resistant bearings claim to be “the first ever to combine a hardened, corrosion-resistant steel race with ceramic bearings and condition-specific seals.”

Kogel founder Ard Kessels states that, ”Kogel has always offered different seals for wet or dry conditions, and we’ve always used chrome steel for our ceramic bearings. With our new proprietary, hardened stainless steel races, we can now offer cyclists the longest lasting and smoothest, best-protected bearings available.”

According to Kessels, most bearings utilize a chrome steel which is extremely hard and durable, but susceptible to rust. Alternatively, some manufacturers rely on stainless steel for races that won’t rust, but it’s softer and wears faster especially when used with ceramic balls.

Kogel claims that their new proprietary hardening process for stainless steel yields a race that is hard enough to survive prolonged use with their ceramic balls but retains its rust-proofing. Combine that with seal options for both wet and dry conditions, and you should have a corrosion resistant bearing that will last through many seasons.

Kogel is confident enough in their new bearing tech to have extended their warranty with a new “3-year very few questions asked” policy. The new CR bearings are available now as an upgrade in all bottom brackets and will come standard in aftermarket fully wheels and oversized pulleys in the Colossus derailleur cage. Kogel will also sell CR bearings as aftermarket upgrades for existing components with more applications coming in the future.

Pricing varies by component, but using a BSA DUB bottom bracket as an example, the standard ceramic BB is currently on sale for $237.99. If you add the CR bearing upgrade, the price jumps to $324.99. Definitely a premium, but if the bearings last as long as they promise, it could be worth the upgrade.

What? Is this just mumbo jumbo for using 440C stainless steel? Very common alternative to 51200.

Are they better than Enduro Bearings XD15?

They look quite similar at least : harden steel race and ceramic balls. And just as expensive …

3 years on a PF92 w/ 30mm spindle. Lots of mtb miles with zero issues.

Everything else lasted 6 months or less.

Another happy XD-15 b/b user over here. Five years on a PF86 Torqtite version, in all kinds of conditions with zero maintenance.

Do yourself a favor. Find any single person that has any kogel ceramic product, and simply ask them “how long did it last ?”..

I am not even saying ask a bike shop mechanic..Literally find any previous owner and see their response. 🙂

Thank me later for the savings to your wallet.

Yes, I am a bike mechanic.

This is funny…..I’m also a Tech and those that don’t service their light seal bearings per the manufacturers direction, regardless of alloy or ceramic all suffer the same failures. Like shocks, service intervals are mandatory to provide healthy function. When your shop sells these, tell those folks to set a reminder to come see you for a service, they’ll love you for it OR simply guide them to less expensive alternatives with heavier seals and simply replace rather than service. Cheers!

“Longer lasting snake oil!”
It’s even more expensive than the normal ridiculously expensive, but it lasts longer, so you end up with it being just ridiculously expensive.

First of all: Any material is corrosion resistant, it’s just a matter to what extent. Which leads to the second point: grease or rather regular renewed grease provides better corrosion resistance than any material alone could have in a bearing.
