Enjoying a huge success with their somewhat late to the party tubeless-ready mountain bike tires, and the emerging trend of road tubeless, it only made sense for Maxxis’ cyclocross tires to start ditching the tubes, too.
Running low pressures on a cyclocross bike can make or break one’s performance, but at the risk of pinch flatting with a tube, or having to deal with the cost and efforts of tubulars, tubeless ready tires make a lot of sense for the sport. And we’ve liked Maxxis’ standard CX treads, so these new Mud Wrestler TR tires are a welcome addition.
The Mud Wrestler TR (left) will come in 700x33c with a dual compound tread and EXO protection. They will have a 60tpi version weighing in at 390 grams, and a 120tpi version weighing in at 370 grams. Though close in weight, the 120tpi version was developed to be a little more supple for lighter weight riders.
On the right, the calmer version of the iconic Wetscream downhill mud tire, the Shorty will soon come in a more trail ready single-ply version. The 2-ply version was introduced last summer. The Shorty is designed for moderate muddy situations thanks to its widely spaced knob configuration. The single ply Shorty is still in the prototype phase, but the construction will be the same 60 TPI single ply casing as their current 2.30 Tubeless Ready Minion DHF, DHR II, and High Roller II. It will have their 3C Maxx Terra compound with EXO protection and be Tubeless Ready. Plans are to produce these in all three 26, 27.5, and 29 inch flavors.
