No matter where you come from, or your background, bikes have a magical way of connecting you to the landscape. For Jon Yazzie, that also meant a way to reconnect with his culture. After growing up in Navajo Nation, Jon found himself in California with the promise of a better education, but without connections to his Navajo roots.
After realizing he was missing his connection with the earth, Jon made his way back home, eventually creating the first bikepacking program for Navajo youth in 2020. Finding “my cultural significance and my part in the world on my bike,” Jon currently runs Dzil Ta’ah Adventures with Nadine Johnson, and offers private tours focused on back country cultural experiences around Navajo Nation.
H/T to Chris Reichel for passing this along.
