If you’re one of the many mechanics that has to travel with your tools, you know how important it is to have a good way to transport them. From protecting them from aggressive baggage handlers, organizing them for use, and making it easier to get to your destination, a good case can be a worthwhile investment. Now, Park Tool has two new options to get your tools to their final destination.
The bigger of the two is the new BX-3 Rolling Big Blue Box. With a name like that, it’s pretty self explanatory, but this is a massive molded polypropylene case that offers 70% more surface area than the also-new BX 2.2. Designed to hold a lot of tools, this one is going to be heavy so it has integrated wheels and a telescoping handle to help you get it through the airport, to your event, or wherever you’re headed. It also has an air pressure compensation valve to keep it from blowing or cracking under pressure. The case does not have integrated locks, but it does have holes for adding padlocks.
Inside, you have twin gas assisted lid struts for easy opening and dual sided upper and mid level folding pallet wings plus a front tool pallet that stores inside for transport. Measuring in at 23.4” x 17.3” x 9.3” (59.5cm x 44cm x 23.5cm), the case weighs 21.6lbs and sells for $514.95.
If you’d prefer more of a briefcase style, the BX-2.2 might be the answer. The case uses a composite shell built around an aluminum frame with an integrated key lock.
Inside, you’ll find dual sided pallet wings and a front pallet that stores inside. The case measures 19.5” x 16.9” x 8.5” (49.5cm x 43cm x 21.5cm), weighs, 13.2lbs and sells for $304.95.
Comparatively, the BX-2.2 is 35 liters in total volume while the BX-3 is a bit larger at 38 liters. Inside the 2.2 has 64 tool straps, 21 tool pockets, and 1890 sq cm of pallet surface area while the 3 has 88 tool straps, 24 tool pockets, and 3200 sq cm of pallet surface area. Both will be available later this September.
