Lighter and cheaper than their original R1V pedal, the all-new Pembree D2A pedal is an entirely carbon neutral flat pedal for mountain biking – made in Sussex, England. The R1V had an unusual design wherein six of the pins were mounted onto “traction rails” – blocks of aluminium that affixed to the main body of the pedal. The new D2A pedal is of a more traditional one-piece design, with all ten pins threading into the main body itself. Let’s take a closer look at what could be the greenest mountain bike pedal on the market.
Pembree D2A MTB Flat Pedal
The new Pembree D2A pedals weigh a claimed 446g per pair, running a 100mm x 110mm platform with a 15mm profile. They are CNC machined from a 2014 T6 Aluminium – a metal specifically developed for critical parts in the aerospace industry where strength and weight were paramount. As a result, Pembree claim the pedal is a lot stronger than most other pedals that are typically made from 6062 Aluminium.
Ten proprietary “traction pins” thread into the pedal, evenly arranged around the edges of the platform. These stainless steel pins are manufactured from 314 Aluminium by Precision Products in Brighton, England.
The Pembree D2A spins about a 7-4 PH Stainless Steel spindle. That’s a “precipitation-hardening” stainless steel said to provide an outstanding combination of high strength, good corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties. Sat on said spindle are bearings sealed both sides, plus an IGUS bushing. The shaft is sealed by Nitrile rubber and steel.
Pembree say the aluminium slimline end cap maximizes the distance between the ball bearings and the IGUS bushing, resulting in more a stable spindle, protecting the bearings and their lifetime.
A Carbon Neutral Pedal
Sustainability is a core value of Pembree, a carbon negative company. How do they achieve production of a carbon neutral pedal? Well, both the D2A and R1V pedals are made from 100% recyclable materials – even down to the bearings and bushings.
Further, they offset the carbon emissions from pedal production through two projects; Temwa and the Pedals4Trees initiative. The Temwa project is a Northern Malawi based project that helps communities fight against deforestation through tree planting. The guys at Temwa calculated that for every pair of pedals produced, 92kg of CO2 is emitted – Temwa offset this by planting 10 trees for every tonne of CO2 produced.
As for the Pedals4Trees initiative, Pembree personally plant at least one tree for every pair of pedals they sell. Furthermore, Pembree’s own manufacturing facility runs off 100% renewable energy and packaging is completely plastic-free, made from recycled paper.
