Since their beginnings, PNW Components has always been about providing quality options at reasonable prices. That ethos has resonated with consumers for obvious reasons. Enough so, that those same consumers have apparently been begging PNW to apply that approach to riding apparel. Now, after more than two years in the works, PNW is happy to oblige.
The Lander Jacket
While the PNW apparel line consists of three pieces, the Lander Jacket is the easy standout. This isn’t a full rain jacket, but something that offers ample protection from the elements while maintaining breathability. The jacket is constructed from a stretchy, durable fabric that still has a comfortable feel and a DWR coating to keep you dry in light rain.
The hood is designed to fit over helmets…
…and rolls up when not in use. There is a snap loop that is designed to loop around a string on the other side of the hood to keep it in place when stowed. Simple elastic cuffs at the arms and a drawstring at the waist keep things snug.
Integrated Hip Pack?
But one of the most interesting features is something that could be described as an integrated hip pack. The back of the jacket features two large vertical zippers. Inside, you’ll find a large pocket with internal dividers for snacks or spares.
Anyone who’s ever put heavy things in a jacket pocket knows that they tend to flop around under aggressive riding. To solve that issue, PNW has included a removable waist belt on the inside of the jacket. When in use, the belt keeps the gear in your pocket from bouncing around. It also will keep the jacket on your back even if you open the front zipper all the way for venting.
You’ll also find two front zippered pockets, one with a key loop. All of the pockets have a mesh interior liner, so if you’re not using them to store goods, you can unzip them for ventilation.
Available in XS-XXL unisex sizing and in Orange or Green, the Lander is priced at $149.
The Ozone Trail Jersey
Underneath the Lander, you might consider the new Ozone jersey from PNW. Made from a blend of 20% wool and 80% polyester, the Ozone has a great feel to it while having the added benefit of being Bluesign approved. Laser perforations at the armpit improve breathability, and flatlock stitching attempts to keep the seams comfortable.
Considered unisex, the Ozone is offered in XS-XXL sizing in Grey or Blue for $59.
The Shuttle Short
Completing the set is the new Shuttle Short. Built using similar 4-way stretch, abrasion and water-resistant DWR fabric, the shorts use a contoured hem to keep them from riding up on kneepads and creating a thigh gap.
Adjustable waist belts keep things snug and there’s a standard button closure at the fly. You’ll also find two zippered pockets, sized to fit a plus-sized smartphone against your thigh, and two standard front pockets.
Offered in a men’s specific fit in XS-XXL, the shorts come in black for $99.
A Word on Sizing & Fit
PNW sent over some samples to check out, and for the most part, the sizing seems spot on—except for the shorts. I’m usually a solid small in most mountain bike apparel at 5’8″ and 150lb with a 30″ waist. On me, the small Shuttle shorts don’t come close to fitting at the waist. They seem to have a fit that is really narrow at the hips, and I’d need to size up at least to a medium on the shorts.
The jacket fit on me is excellent for a small, and the small jersey also fits well.
