Portland Reflector’s Afterglow in action

Portland Reflector has released a big, shiny, detachable reflector that will turn any commuter’s jacket, bag or mumu into a cosmic space beacon of reflectiveness. Dubbed the Afterglow, this pair of large triangular (6.2″ on each side) reflectors uses incredibly strong magnets to allow the user to attach them to just about anything. On a coat, for instance, one reflective magnetic triangle is placed inside the coat, the other is placed on the outside, over the inner magnet and *plink*, there’s now a big reflective triangle attached to the coat. The obvious beauty of this design is the versatility. Keep a pair of these in your commuting bag and, should you get caught out after dark, you can attach it to almost anything and stay seen on the road…

The Afterglow comes in pink, blue, orange and chartreuse with all colors coming with a reflective silver mate, so either the colored triangle or the silver triangle can be visible, all for a reasonable $19. Also on offer are two other reflector products designed to fit on straps – backpack, pannier, messenger, whatever kind of straps you’ve got.  All Portland Reflector products are made in the USA. Check them out if you’re a commuter, because you know at some point you’ll find yourself getting caught out after dark. And when you do, Portland Reflector reflectors don’t mess around. You will be seen.

Not sure about the States but in the UK the triangle shape is used by road signs to notify of dangers ahead. Road signs are stationary bicycles are not, this shape will cause confusion to a driver. Even if it was inverted it would look dissimilar to a road sign.

In the US, orange triangles are used to indicate slow moving vehicles, so this is spot on.

Still though – – better to be seen than not.

Just hook it to your bumm and keep your bumm movin’.

Thanks for posting this! I looked into the rules in the US to make sure I could sell a safety device with this shape, but didn’t check other countries. If things go well with this first version I do plan to release other shapes that might not have the same legal concerns.

“one reflective magnetic triangle is placed inside the coat, the other is placed on the outside, over the inner magnet and *plink*, there’s now a big reflective triangle attached to the coat.”

I wonder why the reflector is two sided? Seems like it’d be lighter and less costly to have an inner magnet set that just served its purpose.

Definitely tried to reduce the cost as much as possible, but there are a few reasons I went with a second reflector instead of just a magnet for the inside part. The main reason is for safety. The magnets are small enough that they could be swallowed by a child if they aren’t encapsulated in something, and they are also pretty good at pinching your finger when they don’t have the reflective material around them; I hurt myself plenty of times when I was testing different size magnets. Most people who try the product for the first time are surprised how strong the magnets are, I went with some pretty powerful ones.

Since I had to go through some sort of manufacturing process to put a layer around the magnet for safety reasons, it wasn’t much more expensive to just use reflective material, which has the benefit of giving a second color option with each product. As for weight, most of the product weight is actually in the magnets, they are very dense compared to the reflective material.

All of that said, you can absolutely order one product and find a couple magnets and share one set with a friend!

Maybe the person could want two different colors?
