Public Bikes are a new company, based in San Francisco, offering cool, stylish bikes based on the classic European city bikes.  At first glance these might seem like fixed-gear bikes however they come with the option of 1, 3 or 8 gears, with the geared models being built around a Shimano Nexus hub and the single speeds coming with a freehub.

There are two base models, the Public M, a step through design, and the Public D, a classic double diamond frame design. The Public M is apparently for those who want to “wear skirts or kilts and prefer not swinging a leg over the crossbar”, and is available with a 3 or 8 speed Nexus hub. The prices will vary from $800 to $1200.
