Public Bikes are a new company, based in San Francisco, offering cool, stylish bikes based on the classic European city bikes. At first glance these might seem like fixed-gear bikes however they come with the option of 1, 3 or 8 gears, with the geared models being built around a Shimano Nexus hub and the single speeds coming with a freehub.

There are two base models, the Public M, a step through design, and the Public D, a classic double diamond frame design. The Public M is apparently for those who want to “wear skirts or kilts and prefer not swinging a leg over the crossbar”, and is available with a 3 or 8 speed Nexus hub. The prices will vary from $800 to $1200.
The Public D is a sturdier, but lighter, design and is available with either 1, 3 or 8 speeds at prices ranging from $600 to $1150.
Fitting in with the stylish design ethos there are several colour choices including powder blue and charteuse. Public Bikes also supplies various panniers and baskets to let you customize your bike. Bikes are available as mail order or from the store in San Francisco’s South Park.
