Gamut is synonymous with chain retention devices tuned for race performance, but the new Cillos stem marks a departure from the small company’s standard fair. Sleek, light, and jet black, it represents just one of the many new products Gamut has in development.
To put the stem through it’s paces, we’ve had it mounted up on everything from trail bikes to dirt jumpers over the past few months. Head past the break to see how it faired.
On the scale, the stem came in at the claimed 150g mark. The company has stated previously they’re working on production “hop up kits,” so you can customize your stem with anodized titanium hardware. These kits should help shave an additional 10g and ad an extra bit of flair to a custom build.
Despite being extensively machined to reduce weight, the emphasis of the Cillos line is actually strength. While some of the early prototypes where actually lighter, they’ve actually added material to the production units.
A stem is one of those simple products that should just work. Mounted on a bike with 740 mm bars, I’ve noticed no flex due to the wide bar clamp. Compared to a Thomson (which is what I use on virtually all of my bikes), the Gamut Cillos is 25g lighter. Available in a slate grey or stealth black, the satin finish compliments any build.
Gamuts first entry into the stem market is an elegant solution that departs from the highly CNC’d ripples of some high end manufacturers. If you dig the look as much as we do, then be sure to check out their latest offerings.
