Voler is probably best known for their team kits for teams like United Health Care and Team USA, State flag series and colorful graphics. They also have an Elite F.S. series that uses all their top of the line fabrics and technologies. You don’t see it offered at your local bike shop, but with a good mix of quality fabrics, proper fit and good looks, I found it to be a good value for the money. For a cycling clothing company that doesn’t end in ini, elli or some other Italian suffix, this combination is up to the task. Read all the details after the break.
To begin, the F.S. Elite Jersey uses a micro mesh material called SQ Pro. SQ Pro is Voler’s version of a wicking fabric and it does a good job of that. It has a textured feel in your hands but it’s not scratchy or irritating. The fabric also has Mynx UV bonded to the yarn which provides a S.P.F. rating of 35+. The fit for my medium Race fit jersey was perfect. The sleeves and chest are snug but not constrictive allowing for just enough movement without blowing in the wind. The bottom of the jersey fell right to my hips and didn’t bunch when in the riding position. The 20 inch zipper allows for good ventilation when the temperature climbs up. The zipper is also hidden meaning the front graphic is not interrupted. The F.S. also comes in a Club cut fit for those that prefer a looser fit.
While the jersey has a lot of technical features, the bib shorts have even more. The Quantum DSX fabric comes from Switzerland and is reported to reduce wind drag by 10 percent. The short uses five panels placed and shaped to provide good movement while riding. There is also a small amount of compression but I felt it was really more of a tight fit rather than true compression. The small silicone band and sticky stitching along the leg keep the shorts in place without being bothersome. The upper bib portion is made of Aero Grid fabric to provide moisture management. The Trilogy pad uses three different densities to provide comfort. This pad is the same one used by Team O.U.C.H. and I found it to be plenty comfortable on my long rides. The flat lock seems prevented any chaffing.
I’m no Tim Gunn or super style guy, but I think the F.S. Elite looks great. Many kits are now using the black, white and red color scheme, but Voler’s is a bit different. Black in the key areas keep it from looking dingy, there’s just enough white to provide a clean look and the red stitching gives a colorful contrast. Logos are kept to a minimum and I like the look of the lettering. For those riders that don’t want to wear team gear but still want to look stylish and coordinated this is a great choice. Plus the individual pieces will work well with other bibs or jerseys you own.
In the F.S. Elite kit Voler has created a solid performing combination that won’t break your bank. The jersey retails for $79.95 and the shorts run $129.95, but both items are currently on sale. Yes, there are other shorts out there that have more technology in them and may be more comfortable, but expect to pay double for those.
