Big things are in the works over at RockyMounts. After 25 years of calling Boulder, CO home, the company is in the midst of moving west – to Grand Junction, CO. The company has big plans for their new digs including $30k that will help construct the park in the Riverfront at Las Colonias Park. But they also have big plans for their line of bike racks. Starting with the new SplitRail LS Hitch Rack.

Looking to improve on the previous version in terms of stability, the updated rack has a redesigned anti-wobble device for easier tightening and less movement. All while still maintaining excellent ground clearance.

Sold in a 2″ hitch version only, the SplitRail LS starts as a 2 bike rack, but can be upgraded to a 3 or 4 bike version with single bike Add-Ons. The rack is designed to hold bikes without frame contact and uses a rubber coated hook to hold the front tire, while each wheel rests in a deep channel that will fit 20″-29″ tires up to 3″ wide. Trays are horizontally adjustable to position them so the bikes don’t hit each other, and each tray has its own locking cable in addition to the locking hitch pin.

Folding up when not in use, the rack also includes a wall hook for storage when not on the vehicle. With a claimed weight of 44lbs, the rack will sell for $549.99.

I’ve got the original version and it works wonderfully. In over a year of use I have had to tighten the bolt once after a very rough forest road drive. It doesn’t explicitly state it up above but I hope it still holds fat bike tires. That was one of the main reasons for me ditching a Kuat hitch mount and going with the splitrail.
