Rolf Prima’s paired spoke mountain bike wheels get a wider 30mm internal update this summer with a couple of new rim profiles in alloy & carbon. Available in 27.5″ or 29″ with Asian-made carbon & aluminum rims, Rolf has added a some different hub options to lace up trail ready wheels for a wide range of budgets…
Rolf Prima 30mm internal alloy mountain bike wheels
Rolf Prima have three new 30mm wide internal trail bike wheelsets each with their signature paired spoke lacing – the Rage, Ralos 30 & Alsea 30 (adding to the 28mm internal Black Rock.)
Update: A bit of complicated raw aluminum tariff-based economics has meant that Rolf/Astral are now producing these new 30mm internal aluminum MTB rims in Taiwan in order to maintain reasonable pricing. The older, more narrow alloy rims are still being made in the US, with now much higher production costs eating into Rolf’s profitability unfortunately. The new carbon rims (below) are also made abroad, too. But all the final complete wheel builds are completed in the US.
Both the Rage & Ralos 30 share the same tubeless-ready 30mm internal asymmetric rim with 24 spokes, stretching out from the original 25mm internal Ralos for more trail riding tire volume in 27.5 or 29″. The $700 Rage adds a new budget build with heavier spokes and an Asian-made hubset (142 or Boost; HG11, MicroSpline, XD, or XRD) with a steel freehub body (claimed 1755g for 27.5, 1795g for 29er wheelsets).
The $1000 Ralos 30 is laced up on Rolf Prima’s high-engagement US-made XST hubs with titanium free hub & centerlock rotor mount (142 or Boost; HG11, MicroSpline, XD, or XRD). The premium hubs offer a decent weight savings for the upgrade cost (claimed 1620g for 27.5, 1670g for 29″).
Rolf Prima 30mm internal carbon mountain bike wheels
Like the alloy Ralos, Rolf Prima’s existing carbon Alsea trail wheels get the wider update too.
The new Alsea 30 is an all-new, now asymmetric carbon rim with a hookless, tubeless-ready bead and the wider 30mm internal width (35mm external), and gets built up with 24 paired spokes on the same American XST premium hubs. 29er-only, the new Alsea 30 is said to be ‘super stiff’ with a $2200 price tag and a claimed weight of just 1470g.
Rolf Prima says the alloy wheels will be ready first, within the month of July, and all new carbon wheels by the middle of August 2019. Everything will be available for pre-order from the Rolf website at the start of next week.
If you are looking for the same rim profiles in either complete wheels or standalone rims, check out the new Astral Cycling versions too.
