In spite of all the advancements with carbon fiber, and even aluminum, to a lot of riders – steel is still quite real. While often a bit heavier, steel offers a comfortable ride, a stout build, and a durable frame for years of abuse. If you’re adventuring off the grid (or onto the grid of a new country), those can be very desirable traits. To satisfy the lust for CroMoly, Salsa has just unveiled their 2020 steel range with updated paint and components on the Fargo, Vaya, and Marrakesh.

Fargo

Featuring a new color and new Teravail Sparwood 29×2.2″ tubeless tires, the Fargo Apex 1 continues as Salsa’s steel gravel and bikepacking dropbar mountain bike.

Overall, the frame looks unchanged with Cobra Kai CroMoly tubing and Alternator V1.5 dropouts which allow you to run multiple hub standards and add a single speed or belt drive set up. Tire choices include 27.5+, 29″, and even 29+. The complete Apex 1 build will go for $2,199, while the frameset includes the Firestarter 110 Deluxe fork for $999.

Marrakesh

It pains my heart to see a seat post as slack or slacker than the fork, and pedals super close to the front wheel…

None of them have seat tube angles slacker than their head tube angles (not that there’s anything wrong with that, plenty of larger road bikes do). None of them have pedals, either.
