Sidi teamed up with L’Eroica to create the Tenacia, a classic road biking shoe made with modern materials for fans of vintage cycling. A classy but low-maintenance synthetic construction for good looks in any conditions. A flat rubber sole that will stick to any style of flat pedals. And key reinforcements that mesh well with traditional metal toe clips & straps, and will keep the shoes looking good for years to come.

Sidi calls the shoes a smooth blend of tradition and innovation, so you can ride your retro bike in comfort and good looks…

The Sidi Tenacia shoes are inspired by the style of shoes road racers last wore in the 1970s.

Their name meaning tenacity in Italian, is a callout to the strength of will and determination it took to race the steel bikes of yesteryear in all weather conditions, over a mix of smooth tarmac and dusty white gravel roads, and all with skinny tires and huge gearing that we wouldn’t dare to ride today. Well, except for at L’Eroica. That’s when otherwise sane modern cyclists break out those vintage bikes and pedal that old-school tech over the beautiful white gravel roads and rolling hills that have made Sienna famous among road cyclists.

But while the Tenacia exude old-school cool style too, Sidi makes them with a modern synthetic upper for easy care and improved durability. Plus, they give the shoes a simple rubber sole that mimics leather sole looks, but delivers more versatile grip on- and off-the-bike.

They do go through the body of the pedal, not the outer cage

Wait… Why would you get an old-school shoe made with “modern” petroleum based materials? Besides the horrible environmental impact, its kind of not truly “old school”. The De Marchi SuperPista’s are not only made with natural materials, but are repairable, and aren’t that much more expensive.

Can I nail on my cleats?…….can I even get cleats for these shoes?

For those who don’t know, you used to have to nail on cleats(for toe clips/ straps) way before clipless pedals came about. These cleats were two piece which would provide a slot for the pedal frame to fit into. The clips and straps would just hold your foot to to the pedal. I’m not sure if you can even find these “nail on cleats” anymore.

With wooden soles for stiffness and so the nails would anchor– this was before my time. I started cycling at the tail end of the toe clips era, but had Nike cycling shoes with nylon soles and slots to screw a slotted plastic cleat into to would fit over and around the edge of a pedal cage before tightening the straps. I modified the cleats for rotation by enlarging the cleat slot and filing angles in the ends.

Do we have to go back to those days? Nail on was the worst.

The pistachio cleats have a deeper slot than other models.
