Smith recently introduced two new youth helmets to its cycling lineup. The Wilder Jr. and Zip Jr. helmets come with pro-level MIPS technology in a kid-sized package.
There’s a lot the two noggin shells have in common, but let’s talk about what sets each one apart.
Wilder Jr. Youth MIPS Helmet: MTB ready
The Wilder Jr. MTB MIPS helmet is a mini-iteration of Smith’s grown-up models. Safety features, fit customization, performance-driven comfort, and architecture. We’ve only seen pictures, but the integrated visor makes the Wilder Jr. look like it’s cut out for your wilder junior.
Technically, Smith’s ‘youth’ helmets come in one size. But the 270-degree VaporFit dial adjusts the fit precisely, so your kid won’t lose their lid — especially important for all those full sends that turn into halfsies mid-air. The visor even boasts built-in eyewear storage for those quick juice box breaks in the shade.
The Wilder Jr. MTB helmet with MIPS comes in alder green, black, electric blue, or pink.

Zip Jr. MIPS Youth Helmet: low key heavy-duty
The Zip Jr. MIPS helmet is the ultra-light all-arounder. As with all ‘youth’ sized Smith helmets, it’s available in youth small. However, the 270-degree adjustable VaporFit knob will, as with the Wilder Jr., cinch or loosen that fit to nth degrees.
The MIPS protection and strong but non-invasive webbing chin straps will come in handy when they bite off a little more trail than they can chew (which will probably happen — a lot).
